K9 season 1 episode 2, titled "Liberation," follows the adventures of K9, a robotic dog created by the Doctor from the popular British TV show Doctor Who. In this episode, K9 is previously captured and finds himself trapped on the planet Gryffen where he ended up largely due to his own fault. While on the planet, he gets to meet several new characters and faces a problem that needs to be solved quickly. K9 discovers that some of the world's population is being held captive by a mysterious corporation. As he attempts to resolve the crisis, he has to use his special abilities like his advanced sensors and laser beams to fight off the corporation's robots.
The episode starts by introducing the audience to Professor Gryffen, who created K9. The professor is in his laboratory, working on a device to help K9. K9 comes in and tells the professor that he's bored, so Gryffen shows the canine some of his latest projects, including a "temporal stabilizer."
Meanwhile, a girl named Starkey is exploring Gryffen's complex and stumbles upon a hidden room. There's an eerie feeling there, and she can't shake an unsettling sensation. She investigates further and soon discovers the secret room is filled with cryogenic chambers, each containing someone in stasis. The former staff are being stored there against their will.
K9 and Gryffen get wind of what's happening, and they immediately set out to explore and find the corporation's base of operations. Along the way to the freedom of those trapped in cryogenic chambers, K9 uses his advanced abilities to outsmart the security set-up by the corporation. He manages to get through to the room with the computer system, which turns out to be a high-tech device that's controlling the cryogenic chambers.
Meanwhile, Starkey continues to trail the people who have taken over the planet. He finds out that the corporation wants to repurpose the world for their mining enterprise. Their plan is to make the planet uninhabitable for everyone except for their mining operation. Starkey and his friend Jorjie begin to come up with a plan of their own to help people escape before it's too late. K9 is also working on his rescue mission, and both groups cross paths as they work towards the same goal.
Throughout the episode, Gryffen also uses the temporal stabilizer to find a way to return K9 to the correct point in time. He uses his own memories of creating K9 to make it work. K9's periods of memories and his ability to gather information, combined with Gryffen's research, ensure that they can solve the crisis and save the souls in captivity. Once they do that, the team sets out to execute a daring mission: they need to rescue as many of the captive people as possible before the corporation can execute their plan.
As they go further into the corporation's facilities, they face more obstacles, including a division of robots that are programmed to stop anyone who attempts to free the captive population. K9 uses his laser beams to take the robots down as Gryffen connects to the cryogenic chambers to make sure everyone onboard is still alive. K9 finds out that the corporation plans to put Cryogesic devices into the atmosphere, thus repurposing the world and making it unsuitable for life in the future.
As the corporation continues its plans, K9 uses his analytical brain to create a plan of his own to prevent Cryogesic devices from being deployed into the atmosphere. The team sets out to systematically locate and disable all the Cryogesic devices planted everywhere, especially the ones in the corporation's base. They have a brief window to do what needs to be done before the head of security can activate the Cryogesic devices. Once they begin to disable the Cryogesic devices, the head of security is forced to engage in a shootout.
Through sheer wits and timely utilization of resources, including K9's laser and Starkey's excellent hacking skills, they prevail against the security forces. The clock is ticking down on the Cryogesic devices, but K9 is almost out of energy, which means he might not be able to do the job alone. The professor develops a successful plan by using the temporal stabilizer to send his consciousness into K9's body. Together, the two entities are powerful enough to forestall the Cryogesic devices and reverse everything. The corporation's plan fails, and the people of Gryffen stand liberated and free from Mr. Drake's evil hand.
