- February 13, 1999
The show Kamikaze Kaitou Jeanne follows the story of a young high school girl named Maron Kusakabe who leads a double life as a phantom thief known as Jeanne d'Arc. Jeanne is tasked with the mission of sealing away demons that are possessing art pieces, stealing them back from those who have unknowingly acquired them.
Season 1 episode 1, "The thief with a notice card," starts with Maron attending the funeral of her grandmother who was also her guardian. Maron's grandmother was a famous artist and her paintings are being displayed at an exhibition. While at the exhibition, Maron spots a beautiful painting that belonged to her grandmother. To her surprise, someone has defiled the painting with a red letter "X" and left a notice saying that the painting will be stolen. This declaration shocks the exhibition members, but Maron is unfazed as she knows who is behind this: another phantom thief who goes by the name of Kaitou Sinbad.
As Jeanne, Maron sets out to stop Kaitou Sinbad from stealing the painting. Along the way, she runs into her best friend and confidant, Miyako, who is unaware of Maron's secret identity. Together, they catch a glimpse of Kaitou Sinbad, who happens to be a lot younger than they imagined. Maron notes that Kaitou Sinbad's techniques are different from hers, and wonders if they were taught by the same person.
The next day, Maron and Miyako are shocked to discover that Kaitou Sinbad has successfully stolen the painting despite their efforts. Maron is determined to get it back and decides to set a trap for Kaitou Sinbad by announcing her next target - the "Queen Of Hearts" statue that is being showcased at the exhibition. Kaitou Sinbad falls right into the trap and Maron reveals herself as Jeanne d'Arc. The two engage in a heated battle, with Sinbad showing off his superior skills for a moment.
Maron's determination to protect her grandmother's legacy fuels her desire to win. She defeats Kaitou Sinbad but finds out that he is just a boy around her own age, who genuinely loves art and was not hired by anyone to steal it. Kaitou Sinbad reveals to Maron that he was taught by her own mother, who was once a phantom thief herself, and shares with her a special connection that exists between their two families.
Without wanting to leave a bad impression on Kaitou Sinbad and out of respect for his passion for art, Maron leaves the painting with him. It's a rare kind of ending for a show like this - Maron has the painting returned to her but she returns it to its thief because he loves it too. It's a unique moment that sets this show apart from others in the Phantom Thief genre.
