Legendary Locations is a show that takes viewers on an adventure around the world exploring historical sites and natural wonders. In episode 10 of season 1, entitled Secrets in Stone, viewers are taken on a journey through Ethiopia's incredible rock-hewn churches.

Host Josh Gates begins the episode by introducing the ancient city of Lalibela, known for its incredible underground churches carved directly out of the surrounding rock. Lalibela is home to 11 monolithic churches, each with its own unique features and designs. Josh explains that these churches were built in the 12th and 13th centuries, during a period of religious upheaval in Ethiopia.

Viewers are then taken on a tour of several of Lalibela's most impressive churches, including the Church of St. George, which is carved into a cross-shaped hole in the ground and is believed to have been built as a symbolic representation of the New Jerusalem. The church's construction required that workers cut down into a monolithic block of rock until they had created a trench deep enough to start carving out the interior. The Church of St. George is a true work of engineering marvel and an awe-inspiring sight to behold.

Next, Josh takes viewers to visit the Church of the Saviour, one of Lalibela's largest churches, which is built to resemble the shape of a Greek cross. The church's design includes 12 pillars, representing the 12 apostles, and several other symbolic elements, including a window in the shape of a cross meant to represent the crucifixion of Christ.

Throughout the episode, Josh explores the rich history and religious symbolism represented by each of the churches he visits in Lalibela. He explains that these churches were carved entirely by hand using basic tools, including hammers, chisels, and pickaxes. Josh also discusses the various legends and mysteries surrounding the construction of the churches, including rumors that they were built with the aid of angels.

As the episode continues, Josh travels outside of Lalibela to visit several other sites of historical and religious importance. He visits the ancient monastery of Debre Damo, a fortress-like structure perched atop a cliff, accessible only by climbing up a rope and entering through a small window. The monastery is believed to have been in use since the 6th century and is home to some of Ethiopia's most cherished religious artifacts.

Finally, Josh travels to the city of Axum, home to many of Ethiopia's most precious religious treasures, including the Ark of the Covenant. The Ark of the Covenant is believed by many to be the most sacred relic in all of Christianity and is said to hold the original tablets of the Ten Commandments. Josh discusses the various legends and myths surrounding the Ark's origins and explains the significance of its place in Ethiopian religious history.

As with every episode of Legendary Locations, Secrets in Stone provides viewers with a fascinating journey through some of the world's most awe-inspiring historical and religious sites. Josh Gates' engaging narration brings the history and significance of each location to life, making it a must-watch for anyone with a passion for world history and ancient cultures.
