Legendary Locations is back with an all-new season of fascinating stories of some of the most stunning places in the world. This week's episode, Rock and a Hard Place, takes us on a journey to explore some of the most unique rock formations around the globe.

We begin in Greece, where we visit the Meteora, a collection of towering rock formations that have been used as a meditation retreat for over 1,500 years. The site is home to six monasteries that date back to the 14th century, each balanced atop a towering pillar of rock. The monasteries were built centuries ago, with materials transported painstakingly up the cliffs by monks and their supporters. As we explore the amazing architecture of the monasteries and the stunning views from the rock pillars, we learn about the rich history and culture of this incredible location.

Next up, we head to the United States and the Bryce Canyon in Utah. Here, we see some of the most unique and spectacular rock formations on Earth, known as hoodoos. Millions of years of erosion have sculpted the landscape into soaring, towering spires of rock, with colors that range from deep reds to vibrant oranges and pinks. We take a hike through the Bryce Canyon and marvel at the beauty of these formations, learning about the geology of the region and the forces that shaped it.

Our journey then takes us to the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most awe-inspiring rock formations in the world. It consists of tens of thousands of interlocking basalt columns, formed from a volcanic eruption over 60 million years ago. As we explore the site, we learn about the fascinating legends and myths that are associated with it, including the story of the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumhaill and the Scottish giant Benandonner.

The episode then takes us to Australia, where we visit the 12 Apostles, a collection of rock stacks located off the shore of Victoria. These towering columns of rock are up to 45 meters tall and were formed by erosion over millions of years. Visitors can view them from a safe distance on the shore or take a helicopter tour to get a bird's eye view of the stunning formations. We explore the history and science behind the 12 Apostles and learn about the forces that shaped this incredible coastline.

Finally, we head to China to visit the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that's home to a series of towering sandstone pillars that have been famously used as the set for the James Cameron movie "Avatar". Visitors can take a cable car to get a bird's eye view of the pillars and hike through the park to explore their stunning beauty and learn about their origins. We explore the myths and legends behind the pillars and how they have become an important symbol of Chinese culture.

Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to stunning visuals of some of the most unique rock formations around the world and learn about the rich history and culture behind them. Rock and a Hard Place is an illuminating and inspiring journey that's sure to leave viewers in awe of the natural beauty of our world.
