In McHale's Navy season 1 episode 5, titled "Movies Are Your Best Diversion," the crew of the PT-73 continue their work as the fighting men of the Pacific, finding themselves in the middle of a series of misadventures that bring them closer together as a team.
As the episode begins, we see Lt. Commander Quinton McHale (played by Ernest Borgnine) and his crew being given the job of escorting a group of nurses to a nearby island. Everyone is eager to have some time with the beautiful women, but things take a turn when they receive a call from headquarters to report back to base immediately.
Upon arriving at base, they find out that they've been given a new mission - to help a group of Hollywood filmmakers who have been sent to the base to shoot a war movie. McHale and his men are tasked with providing the filmmakers with authentic footage of naval battles, but they quickly realize that the work is going to be more difficult than they imagined.
Not only do the filmmakers have no idea what they're doing, but they're also making demands that are difficult to meet. McHale and his crew must figure out a way to get the footage that the filmmakers need while still carrying out their own duties as navy personnel.
Meanwhile, the crew faces a number of other challenges. They must deal with a group of stranded soldiers who need their help escaping from the island, in addition to avoiding getting caught by their strict commanding officer, Captain Binghamton (played by Joe Flynn).
Through it all, McHale and his men are able to use their quick thinking and resourcefulness to get the job done. But even though they succeed in helping the filmmakers, they realize that they may have inadvertently created a new problem - by providing the filmmakers with so much footage, they may have given the enemy valuable information about their tactics and strategies.
"Movies Are Your Best Diversion" is a fun and engaging episode that showcases the humor and camaraderie of the crew of the PT-73. With its mix of action, comedy, and drama, it's a great example of why this classic show remains beloved by fans even decades after it first aired.
