Not a Normal Newborn is the fifth episode of the first season of Mystery Diagnosis, a medical documentary television series that explores the lives of individuals who have struggled with mysterious and rare medical conditions and the medical professionals who help them solve their mysteries.

In this episode, viewers are introduced to the Mancini family, a young couple who had just had their first child, a beautiful baby boy named Dominic. However, shortly after his birth, the Mancini's noticed that Dominic was experiencing severe abdominal discomfort and was vomiting excessively. They took him to the hospital and were told that he may just have a mild case of reflux. However, as the days went on, Dominic's symptoms worsened.

His parents noticed that he was extremely lethargic, had developed a fever, and was projectile vomiting. They took him back to the hospital, where doctors tried to determine what was wrong with the baby. However, despite numerous tests and exams, they could not pin down a diagnosis. The Mancini's were told that they could take Dominic home, but they would need to monitor him closely.

Over the next few weeks, Dominic's symptoms became more severe. He was losing weight, had developed a severe rash all over his body, and was experiencing intense pain in his abdomen. His parents were terrified that they were going to lose their baby. They took him back to the hospital and begged the doctors to keep him there until they could figure out what was wrong with him.

For the next several weeks, Dominic was seen by numerous specialists, but none of them could come up with a diagnosis. He was subjected to numerous painful tests and procedures, including multiple bone marrow biopsies and spinal taps. None of these tests provided any answers. Meanwhile, Dominic's condition continued to deteriorate, and his parents were beside themselves with worry.

Finally, after weeks of waiting and uncertainty, a doctor discovered several abnormalities in Dominic's blood work. He was referred to a specialist who had experience with a rare genetic condition called Maple Syrup Urine Disease (MSUD). It is a metabolic disorder that affects the way the body breaks down amino acids found in protein. If left untreated, it can cause severe neurological problems and even lead to death.

The specialist tested Dominic for MSUD and discovered that he did, indeed, have the condition. His body was unable to process the amino acids properly, leading to a dangerous buildup of toxins in his blood. The doctors immediately put him on a strict diet that restricted his protein intake and began him on a course of medication to help remove the toxins from his body.

With his new treatment plan in place, Dominic slowly began to improve. His rash disappeared, and he started to gain weight. He started growing and acting like a normal baby for the first time in his young life. His parents were overjoyed to see him thriving, and they were forever grateful to the doctors who had finally found a diagnosis for their son's mysterious illness.

Not a Normal Newborn is a heart-wrenching episode that highlights the importance of persistence and perseverance when dealing with a medical mystery. It also sheds light on the importance of genetic testing and early intervention when dealing with rare genetic conditions. Viewers will be moved by the Mancini's story and inspired by the dedication and expertise of the medical professionals who worked tirelessly to help their baby recover.
