  • April 8, 2010

Expedition Apocalypse is the second episode of the seventh season of Naked Science. In this episode, viewers are taken on a journey to explore the possibility of an apocalypse happening in the future, specifically the year 2034. The show chronicles experts and scientists taking part in a mission to prepare for such a scenario, to mitigate its impact and ensure the survival of humanity.

The episode begins with a brief overview of how the world might end, either through natural disasters or human-made devastations, such as nuclear wars or deadly pandemics. It is revealed that a team of experts from different disciplines has been gathered to undertake a survival mission in the remote wilderness of Wyoming. Billed as the “2034 apocalypse expedition,” the mission aims to simulate a catastrophic apocalypse scenario and test the plans made for survival.

The team is led by the emergency management specialist, Dr. Irwin Redlener. He highlights how most people are not prepared to survive a disaster and how the first 72 hours are crucial for survival. The team is made up of experts including a survivalist, a communications specialist, military personnel, and a physician with expertise in robotics. They will undertake a series of simulations to test their preparedness for a worst-case scenario.

The team sets out on their survival mission into the wilderness, which is designed to simulate a post-apocalyptic world. They have limited resources, including a few old-style bikes, vintage snowmobiles, and a few batteries. They traverse rugged terrain, battling against freezing temperatures and handling unforeseeable encounters, including aggressive bears. Despite all their preparations, the team faces challenges and uncertainty throughout their journey.

We see them creating makeshift shelters with whatever they can find, building fires to keep warm, and scavenging for food in the wilderness. Communication is a significant problem on the mission, and the team resorts to old-style communication methods like whistles, smoke signals, and hand signals. Moreover, they face technical issues with the communication system provided by the military. The communication specialist tries to troubleshoot and fix the issue, highlighting the importance of communication in such scenarios.

One of the most crucial aspects of their survival is securing a sustainable food source. The team catches fish and attempts to trap rabbits while vigilantly monitoring their sources to ensure they are free from contamination. The physician brings along an AI prototype that can help with tasks, such as scanning animal tracks and detecting harmful and edible plants.

The team also prepares for a possible encounter with other people, who might not have their best interests at heart. They set up a perimeter, create security protocols and establish a hidden campsite, to deter any potential enemies. They also learn how to use firearms and other weapons for self-defense, relying on military personnel to guide them.

As the expedition progresses, Dr. Redlener constantly evaluates how well the team is working together and whether they are prepared for any surprises that may arise. However, despite their preparations, the team encounters multiple challenges, from broken equipment to interpersonal conflicts, and each member must persevere to overcome them.

Overall, Expedition Apocalypse provides an intriguing and thought-provoking exploration of what life could be like if we were facing an apocalypse. The show highlights the importance of preparing for such scenarios and the need to plan appropriately for survival. Viewers will walk away with a greater understanding of the importance of preparation, communication, and working together in the face of unimaginable adversity.
