In episode 14 of season 1 of Pawn Stars, titled "Old Man's Gamble," Rick, the owner of the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas, is met with an interesting array of items.
The episode begins with a customer bringing in a vintage gas pump meter. The gas pump meter is a classic example of American automobile history, being used as a standard component of gas stations across the United States. The customer expresses interest in selling the gas pump meter, and Rick proceeds to examine the item. He appraises it to be worth around $300 to $500, but in order to ensure the authenticity of the item and the accuracy of the appraisal, he calls in an expert to examine it further. The expert confirms the authenticity of the gas pump meter and agrees with Rick's appraisal.
Next, a man walks into the pawn shop and presents Rick with a World War II-era minesweeper. The customer tells Rick that the minesweeper was used during the D-Day landings in Normandy and that he wants to sell it. The minesweeper is a very rare piece of history, and Rick is immediately interested in it. However, he wants to make sure that it is authentic and not a replica. In order to do this, he brings in an expert who confirms that the minesweeper is indeed authentic. Rick then offers the customer $7,500 for the piece, which the customer ultimately accepts.
A couple then walks into the pawn shop carrying an antique sewing machine. The sewing machine is from the 1800s and is in excellent condition. The couple tells Rick that they inherited the sewing machine from their grandparents and that they have no use for it. Rick offers them $300 for the sewing machine, which they accept.
Next, a man walks into the pawn shop carrying a custom-made 1914 Harley Davidson motorcycle. The bike is in excellent condition, and Rick is immediately interested in it. The man purchased the motorcycle from a collector and is now interested in selling it. Rick brings in an expert who confirms the authenticity of the motorcycle and offers the man $250,000 for it. The man, however, is asking for $300,000. Rick and the man ultimately come to an agreement of $275,000.
Finally, a customer brings in a vintage gambling device called a trade stimulator. The trade stimulator was a type of slot machine used to stimulate trade in businesses. The customer tells Rick that he found the device in his grandfather's attic and is interested in selling it. Rick brings in an expert who confirms that the trade stimulator is authentic and offers the customer $1,500 for it, which he accepts.
Throughout the episode, Rick negotiates with each customer in his usual calm and collected manner, providing expert appraisals and finding middle ground that works for everyone. The episode showcases some of the most interesting items to come through the pawn shop and highlights Rick's expertise in appraising and negotiating deals.
