The film is also the first of a four-part film series and covers several of the major points from the first few episodes of the television series, concluding shortly after lead protagonist Shinji must defeat an angel with a positron rifle linked to the electrical grid of the entire Japanese continent. While the film debuted in theaters at a running time of 98 minutes in length, the uncut edition of the film features an additional 3 minutes of footage.
