In season 4 of Rebus, the first episode titled "Resurrection Man" opens with Detective Inspector John Rebus returning to work after being suspended from the force for past alcohol issues. He is anxious to prove himself and get back into the good graces of his colleagues.

The episode centers around the investigation of a gruesome murder in which a notorious former IRA hitman, Sean Flynn, is found dead and mutilated. The killer has left behind a calling card, a Celtic cross, that leads Rebus and his team to believe that this was a politically motivated murder.

The investigation delves into the dark underbelly of Edinburgh's criminal underworld as Rebus and his partner DS Holmes connect the murder to other organized crime activities in the city. Suspects abound, including a prominent businessman with ties to the IRA and a young man who was once a protege of Sean Flynn.

As the investigation progresses, Rebus struggles to balance his dedication to the case with his own personal demons, including his drinking and strained relationship with his ex-wife. He also faces tension with his colleague DS Clarke, who is resentful of Rebus' reinstatement and skeptical of his methods.

The tension builds as the killer strikes again, leaving behind another mutilated body and another Celtic cross. With the clock ticking, Rebus must fight to solve the case and catch the killer before another victim is claimed.

"Resurrection Man" is a gripping and suspenseful episode that showcases the gritty realism and captivating characters that have made Rebus a beloved series for crime drama fans. As always, the performances are top-notch, with Ken Stott delivering a nuanced and complex portrayal of the flawed yet determined John Rebus.
