Rosemary & Thyme

Rosemary Boxer, a university lecturer and plant pathologist, is at a friend's investigating sick trees, when she is let go from the University of Malmesbury in an underhanded way. Laura Thyme, a former Woman Police Constable and housewife, is abandoned by her husband after 27 years for a 23 year old. The two old friends meet by chance at a hotel, just before a friend of Thyme dies in a car wreck. They investigate a plot against Rosemary's friend, who was business partners with Thyme's friend. They eventually go in business together, travelling Europe as gardeners and amateur sleuths.

Rosemary and Thyme was produced by Carnival Films for ITV. Carnival is a British independent drama producer. It was founded by Brian Eastman, who also co-created and produced the show. Clive Exton was the other co-creator and wrote 10 of the 22 episodes. The show aired from 2003 to 2006, while the last two episodes aired in 2007. Carnival has produced such shows as Downtown Abbey and The 10th Kingdom.

Rosemary and Thyme was created for Eastman's wife, Christabel Albery, who is an avid gardener. The name comes from the poem Scarborough Fayre, while the theme song is a variation of the song Scarborough Fair. Eastman wrote three mystery novels based on the show. They were published by Allison and Busby.

Laura Thyme is played by Pam Ferris. Ferris was born in Germany and raised in Wales and New Zealand. Along with paying Aunt Marge in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, she has acted in such shows as Luther and Midsomer Murders. Rosemary Boxer is played by Felicity Kendal. Kendal was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1995 Queen's Honour List. She has acted in everything from Shakespeare to Doctor Who. The only other recurring characters are Ryan Philpott, who plays Rosemary's son Matthew, and Daisy Dunlop, who plays Rosemary's daughter Helena.
