In the fifth episode of Roots Less Traveled season 2, titled "True Family Bonding," the show follows two family members as they explore their ancestry and learn more about their interconnected roots.
The episode begins with the host, Faruq Tauheed, introducing the two guests – Chrystal and her father, Ron. Chrystal's great-grandfather was adopted and her family has little information on his birth parents or their ancestry. Ron, Chrystal's father, has been interested in genealogy and his own family history for years. The two are hoping to use their combined knowledge and resources to uncover more information about Chrystal's biological great-grandparents and their heritage.
The journey starts off in New York City, where Chrystal's great-grandfather was adopted. Ron has already done research and has found out where her great-grandfather was adopted. The two of them, with the help of a local genealogist, go through city records and learn more about the adoption process at the time. They discover that adoption procedures were quite different back in the early 1900s and that Chrystal's great-grandfather's birth parents may have been immigrants.
The next stop is Pennsylvania, where Chrystal's great-grandfather's adoptive family was originally from. They meet up with a distant relative who has been researching the family tree for years. The relative shares information on the adoptive family and what they know about Chrystal's great-grandfather's birth parents. Ron and Chrystal are able to learn more about the family's history in Pennsylvania and how Chrystal's great-grandfather may have ended up in New York City.
The search for information takes them to a small town in Ohio, where Chrystal's great-grandfather's birth father lived for a time. They visit the local historical society and are able to find out more about his life there. They learn about his occupation, his family, and even get to see a photo of him for the first time. Chrystal and Ron are overwhelmed with emotion as they feel like they are finally getting to know more about their family history.
The final stop is in Georgia, where Chrystal's great-grandmother's family was from. Ron and Chrystal visit the old family homestead and meet with local historians to learn more about her family's history. They discover that her family may have been one of the first African American families to live in the area and learn about the challenges they faced.
Throughout the episode, Ron and Chrystal bond over their shared journey to uncover their family history. They learn about the struggles and triumphs of their ancestors and gain a greater appreciation for their own roots.
"True Family Bonding" is a heartwarming and informative episode that highlights the importance of understanding our family history. The show serves as a reminder that our past shapes who we are and connects us to those who came before us.
