In the first episode of Seirei no Moribito entitled "Barusa, the Female Bodyguard," we are introduced to Balsa, a female bodyguard who has been hired to protect a prince named Chagum. Chagum is the second son of the Emperor and is believed to be possessed by a supernatural creature known as a "water spirit." The emperor's astrologers have predicted that the spirit will bring disaster to the kingdom, and so Chagum is marked for death. Balsa takes it upon herself to protect the young prince and keep him safe from those who would do him harm.
The episode opens with Balsa watching over Chagum from a distance as he plays in a river. She is approached by a woman who recognizes her as a bodyguard and urges her to take a job protecting the prince. Balsa initially refuses, saying that she is not interested in working for the emperor's family. However, when the woman reveals that Chagum is in danger and will be killed if he stays in the palace, Balsa changes her mind and agrees to take the job.
The rest of the episode follows Balsa and Chagum as they flee the city and try to outrun those who would do them harm. Balsa quickly realizes that they are being pursued by a group of highly skilled hunters known as the "Hunters' Guild." With their superior tracking skills and deadly weaponry, the hunters are a formidable force to be reckoned with. Balsa and Chagum are able to evade their pursuers for a time, but they soon find themselves cornered in a mountain pass.
In a tense and thrilling sequence, Balsa faces off against the hunters in a one-on-one battle. Her martial arts skills are on full display as she takes on each hunter in turn, using both hand-to-hand combat and her deadly spear to fend them off. Chagum, meanwhile, watches in awe as Balsa demonstrates her prowess in battle. Eventually, Balsa is able to defeat the hunters and send them running, allowing her and Chagum to continue on their journey.
The episode ends with Balsa and Chagum taking refuge in a small village. Balsa knows that they cannot stay there for long, as their pursuers will surely be hot on their trail. However, for the time being they are safe, and Balsa takes the opportunity to try and learn more about the water spirit that is said to possess Chagum. She meets with a wise woman who tells her that the spirit is not a curse, as many believe, but rather a blessing. She also reveals that Chagum is not the only one in danger, as there are others who seek to use the water spirit's power for their own purposes.
