Sledge Hammer! is an American satirical police sitcom produced by New World Television that ran for two seasons on ABC from 1986 to 1988. The series was created by Alan Spencer and stars David Rasche as the titular character, Inspector Sledge Hammer, a comically violent and reckless detective who resolves crimes in his own unorthodox ways, parodying the tough-guy persona and action hero tropes prevalent in police dramas of the 1980s.

In Season 2, Episode 10, titled Hammeroid, the show continues to deliver its unique blend of humor and action as we follow the adventures of Sledge Hammer, who despite—or perhaps because of—his extreme methods, remains a dedicated officer with an unwavering commitment to uphold the law, albeit through his unconventional lens.

The episode opens with the city gripped by the fear of crime, a scenario Sledge Hammer knows all too well. However, this time around, the threat comes from a science fiction angle, as the creators of Sledge Hammer! once again toy with genre themes, adding a new layer of absurdity to the series' trademark high-octane shenanigans.

In this installment, the city is under siege by a menace that appears to be more than human, prompting the police department to seek out even more unorthodox solutions. Given the extraordinary nature of the crimes, Sledge's superiors are reluctantly forced to call upon his "expertise" to handle this outlandish situation. Sledge, entrenched in his belief that there's no problem too great for his trusty Magnum—and his ego—rises to the challenge with predictable gusto.

Sledge, accompanied by his more level-headed and competent partner, Detective Dori Doreau, played by Anne-Marie Martin, dives into the investigation, displaying his characteristic disdain for regulations and procedure. Doreau's patience and professionalism contrast sharply with Sledge's freewheeling style, providing the comedic foil and voice of reason against his over-the-top antics.

As the plot unfolds, viewers are treated to a smorgasbord of satire, blending the police procedural with elements of sci-fi and the ridiculousness of low-budget B-movies. This time, Sledge encounters technology and science gone awry, thrusting him into a world where his brute force approach to crime-fighting may not be the straightforward solution to the problem at hand.

Throughout the episode, there's an array of clever references and pastiches of well-known science fiction and the tics of robotic characters from popular culture. These elements serve to amplify the already exaggerated universe in which Inspector Hammer operates. The show's writers skillfully navigate these homages while never losing sight of the episode's core objective—to parody the genre and make the audience laugh at the absurdity of it all.

Sledge's interactions with the technological threats and his attempts at negotiation—with or without his firearm—are both humorous and telling of his character. He approaches every situation with his unique blend of bravado, ignorance, and unexpected ingenuity, inevitably leading to a series of gags and punchlines that embody the spirit of the series.

Meanwhile, the secondary characters, from their irascible yet oftentimes ineffectual captain, Captain Trunk, played by Harrison Page, to the range of guest stars and bit players, all contribute to the farcical tone of the episode. Each character either aides or inadvertently hinders Sledge and Doreau's progress, and their reactions to Sledge's methods add a richness to the comedy, showcasing the extremes of his personality and approach.

The climax of the episode, as is standard for Sledge Hammer!, involves a mix of slapstick, stunts, and the exaggeration of action-movie tropes. Viewers can expect a resolution that is as much about the laughs as it is about closing the case, with a solution that is uniquely 'Sledge' in execution.

Throughout the episode, "Hammeroid" remains faithful to the core elements that made Sledge Hammer! a cult favorite. It maintains a balance between poking fun at serious dramas while still delivering a standalone story that is entertaining and filled with enough twists, turns, and laughs to keep fans of the series engaged.

Fans of the show can look forward to an explosive, humorous, and irreverent installment in the Sledge Hammer! saga that not only embraces the legacy of the first season but also continues to push the envelope with its blend of cop show parody and science fiction shenanigans.
