Sonic the Hedgehog, also known as SatAM to distinguish itself from other Sonic series, is an animated spin-off of the video game franchise that focuses on a group of freedom fighters as they try to overthrow the tyrannical regime of Dr. Robotnik. These freedom fighters include Sonic and his uncle Chuck, Tails P. Rower, Princess Sally Alicia Acorn, Rotor the Walrus, the partially "roboticized" Bunny Rabbot, Antoine Depardieu the Coyote, and Dulcy the young dragon.

In this animated iteration of the Sonic franchise, Dr. Robotnik rules an industrialized, dystopian version of Mobius and turned all dissidents into loyal, unquestioning robots through his Roboticizer machine. As the freedom fighters launch counteroffensives from their base of the forested region of Knothole, their exploits have them seeking not only a way to overthrow Dr. Robotnik, but also reinstating Sally as the proper ruler of Mobius, and discover a method that will successfully reverse Dr. Robotnik's "roboticizer" process for good.

Sonic the Hedgehog lasted for two 13 episodes seasons, with the last actual episode ending with a teaser for a new major villain. However, while plans were made for a third season of the series, the show was cancelled before they could be started.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a series that is currently running and has 4 seasons (127 episodes). The series first aired on September 18, 1993.

Live-Action 'Sonic the Hedgehog' Movie in the Works

This could either go very well, or very poorly. There's a live-action/CGI "Sonic the Hedgehog" movie in the works, according to THR. Based on the popular Sega games that became billion-dollar franchise, the Sonic movie will combine computer animation from Japanese animation firm Marza Animation Planet with live-action elements. Van Robichaux and Evan Susser have been tapped to write the project.
