  • September 16, 1967

In season 1 episode 2 of Spider-Man (1967), entitled "Where Crawls the Lizard / Electro the Human Lightning Bolt," we find our friendly neighborhood superhero, Spider-Man, facing off against not one, but two formidable enemies.

The episode opens with Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, being asked by his boss at the Daily Bugle to investigate sightings of strange creatures lurking in the city's sewers. Despite the potential danger, Spider-Man is eager to take on the mission and investigates the sewers, where he discovers the shocking secret behind the creatures' appearance: Dr. Curt Connors, a scientist whom Parker previously worked with, has been experimenting with a serum that turns him into the giant, reptilian villain known as the Lizard.

As Spider-Man tries to stop the Lizard's rampage, he finds himself confronted by another menace: Electro, the human lightning bolt. Electro has the power to control electricity and has been causing a city-wide blackout in order to wreak havoc.

As the episode unfolds, Spider-Man must fight both of his enemies while trying to protect the citizens of New York. He is aided by his trusted ally, police captain George Stacy, who believes in the hero's good intentions and sees Spider-Man as an ally rather than a criminal.

Throughout the episode, we see Spider-Man using his trademark web-slinging and acrobatic abilities to navigate the urban landscape, dodging Electro's bursts of electricity and using his intelligence to outsmart the Lizard. Meanwhile, the script also explores the personal struggles of Connors, who is torn between his desire to cure himself of his monstrous alter ego and his fear of losing his scientific career.

"Where Crawls the Lizard / Electro the Human Lightning Bolt" is a classic example of the type of storytelling that made the Spider-Man animated series so beloved by fans. It has all the elements of a great adventure: thrilling action, memorable villains, and a relatable hero who faces both physical and emotional challenges.

While the animation style of the 1960s may appear dated by today's standards, the narrative remains timeless and engaging. The voice acting performances of the cast, especially Paul Soles as Spider-Man/Peter Parker, are excellent, bringing a sense of charm and energy to the characters. Overall, this episode is a great entry point to the Spider-Man series for both fans and newcomers alike.
