Spies of Warsaw is a two-part mini-series that is co-produced by BBC America for its Dramaville programming block. Each part is two hours in length. Spies of Warsaw is a story of mystery and intrigue that stars David Tennent as Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier. David Tennent is known for his performance in the Dr. Who television series. The character of Jean-Francios is a French aristocrat and intelligence operative with a military background. Janet Montgomery is featured as Anna Skarbek. Anna is a bright, young lawyer for the League of Nations. Piotr Baumann appears as Maxim Mostov, a Russian Socialist and writer. Spies of Warsaw is based on the novel of the same name, written by Alan Furst. The story follows the activities of the espionage communities in France and Germany during the build up to World War II. It was filmed to capture the style and tension of the pre-World War II European setting. The action in Spies of Warsaw centers around the intense relationship between Jean-Francios and Anna. Jean-Francios is convinced that Hitler's invasion of Poland is on the horizon, but his superiors are not so sure. The story develops as the spies get closer and closer to the truth. The characters are well developed with complex and emotional interactions as they encounter deception and adventure. The film is set in London, Paris, Poland and Berlin with many scenes filled on location in the rebuilt old-town areas of Warsaw, Poland. Also appearing in the film are actors Anton Lesser and Richard Lintern. The book was adapted for the screen by writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais. The show is a co-production of BBC America, Arte France, Apple Film and BBC Worldwide. The executive producers are Richard Fell and Jamie Laurenson.
