Surfing the Menu is a show about two young chefs, Ben and Curtis, who travel the world in search of great food and surfing spots. In season 2 episode 6, the duo heads to Eyre Peninsula, SA, to explore the culinary delights of the region.
Eyre Peninsula is a beautiful and remote area of South Australia, known for its rugged coastline, stunning beaches, and abundant seafood. Ben and Curtis start their journey in the town of Port Lincoln, where they meet up with local chef Tony Ford. Tony is a fifth-generation fisherman who has been working the waters off Eyre Peninsula for decades. He takes the guys out on his boat to show them his favorite fishing spots and teach them about the local seafood.
Next, the team heads to a nearby oyster farm, where they meet with Tom Robinson, another local fisherman. Tom shows them how oysters are farmed and harvested and teaches them about the unique flavor of Eyre Peninsula oysters. Ben and Curtis are able to sample some of these delicious oysters straight out of the water, and they immediately fall in love with them.
After a long day on the water, the guys head to a local restaurant called Del Giorno's for dinner. Del Giorno's is known for its fresh seafood and stunning ocean views, and Ben and Curtis are excited to see what they have to offer. They start with some of the famous local oysters, which are served with a fresh mignonette sauce. Next, they try the pan-seared King George whiting, a local fish that is cooked to perfection. Finally, they finish off the meal with a decadent chocolate dessert.
On their second day in Eyre Peninsula, Ben and Curtis head out on their own to explore the region. They start by visiting a local winery, where they meet with the winemaker and learn about the unique climate and soil that makes the wine from this area so special. They sample some of the delicious wines, including a crisp Sauvignon Blanc that pairs perfectly with the local seafood.
Next, the guys head to a local bakery to learn about the famous local pastry called the Kitchener bun. The Kitchener bun is a sweet, doughy bun that is coated in sugar and filled with cream. Ben and Curtis get to work making their own Kitchener buns, and they put their own twist on the classic recipe by adding some local fruits and flavors.
Finally, the guys head back to Port Lincoln to prepare a meal for some local surfers. They pick up some fresh seafood at the local fish market and head to a friend's beach house to prepare the meal. They start by making a delicious seafood chowder, using some of the fresh fish and shellfish they picked up at the market. Next, they grill some local prawns and serve them with a citrusy salsa. Finally, they finish off the meal with their own version of the Kitchener bun, which they serve with a homemade berry compote.
