Johnny Smith continues to grapple with his psychic abilities in season 2, episode 16 of The Dead Zone, aptly titled "The Hunt." As the episode begins, Johnny is having strange visions of a deer--visions that ultimately lead him to believe that the animal is being stalked by a man with a bow and arrow. Despite skepticism from the people around him, Johnny becomes fixated on finding the hunter and ending the animal's suffering.

Throughout the episode, Johnny's powers continue to manifest in unpredictable and uncontrollable ways. As he tries to navigate his visions and make sense of the clues he receives from the world around him, he finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a web of dangerous secrets.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Walt Bannerman (played by Chris Bruno) is dealing with his own set of problems. After a young boy goes missing in the local woods, Walt must contend with panicked parents and a mounting sense of pressure to find the child before it's too late. As the search for the missing boy intensifies, Walt begins to realize that there may be a link between the child's disappearance and Johnny's strange obsession with the deer.

One of the strengths of "The Hunt" is its willingness to embrace the darker side of Johnny's powers. In previous episodes, Johnny's psychic abilities have been portrayed as a source of hope and comfort--a way to bring closure and peace to those who have been affected by tragedy. In this episode, however, we see a more sinister aspect of Johnny's gifts.

As Johnny becomes increasingly obsessed with the deer and the hunter, his actions begin to have real-world consequences. People are hurt, relationships are strained, and even Johnny himself starts to question whether he's doing more harm than good. It's a refreshing change of pace from the more optimistic tone of earlier episodes, and it helps to make Johnny feel like a more complex and multifaceted character.

Another highlight of the episode is the relationship between Johnny and Bruce Lewis (played by John L. Adams), a former student of Johnny's who now works as a science teacher at the local high school. Bruce is one of the few people who knows about Johnny's powers, and he serves as a much-needed sounding board for Johnny as he tries to unravel the mystery of the deer and the hunter.

Their interactions are charming and funny, and they help to ground the episode in a sense of reality. It's easy to get caught up in the more outlandish aspects of The Dead Zone, but the scenes between Johnny and Bruce remind us that these are real people with real lives and real relationships at stake.

Overall, "The Hunt" is a strong entry in The Dead Zone's second season. It's a well-crafted mystery that keeps you guessing until the very end, and it features some of the best performances of the series so far. If you're a fan of supernatural thrillers or just looking for a good mystery to sink your teeth into, this episode is definitely worth a watch.
