The Durrells is a British television drama series that aired in 2016. The show is based on the autobiographical book My Family and Other Animals by British naturalist Gerald Durrell. The series follows the story of a family who moves from England to the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s.
Episode 4 of The Durrells takes place on a beautiful day in Corfu. The family wakes up to a bright and sunny morning, and they all start their day with a sense of excitement. Louisa decides to surprise her children with a trip to the beach, and they all eagerly head out to enjoy the day.
While at the beach, the Durrells meet a man named Hugh who is a writer. Leslie, the oldest son, is immediately drawn to Hugh and his intellectual conversation. The two quickly become friends, and Hugh offers to take Leslie under his wing to teach him about writing.
Back at the house, Louisa is thrilled to learn that a man named Sven, who is a Swedish artist, wants to paint her portrait. Louisa is nervous about the idea, but ultimately decides to go through with it. Sven's painting talents are soon revealed to the family, and they are astonished by the stunning portrait he creates of Louisa.
Meanwhile, Gerry, the youngest Durrell child, takes it upon himself to rescue a tortoise from a nearby pond. He brings the tortoise back to the house, where he decides to keep it as a pet. Though Louisa is initially hesitant about the idea of adding a new animal to their already chaotic household, she eventually relents and allows Gerry to keep the tortoise.
Later in the day, simmering tensions between Leslie and his siblings come to a head. Leslie's intellectual interests and close bond with Hugh have caused his siblings to feel neglected and overlooked. The situation escalates until finally, Leslie decides to leave the house and live with Hugh instead.
The episode ends on an emotional note, with the Durrell family trying to come to terms with Leslie's departure. Though the family has had their share of ups and downs since their move to Corfu, this episode underscores the importance of resilience, family, and the enduring power of love.
