It is the year 1933 and the Great Depression is in full swing. In the small town of Walton's Mountain, the Walton family strives to make ends meet. In season 1 episode 14, entitled "The Minstrel", the focus shifts to John-Boy, the oldest son of the Walton family, who is struggling to find his place in the world and to figure out what he wants to do with his life.

As the episode begins, John-Boy is feeling restless and unfulfilled. He has dreams of becoming a writer, but he lacks the confidence to pursue his dream. To make matters worse, his parents are pressuring him to take a job at the local mill to help support the family.

One day, John-Boy meets a traveling minstrel named Ashley Longworth Jr. Ashley is a charming and charismatic young man who plays the guitar and sings folk songs. John-Boy is immediately fascinated by Ashley and his carefree lifestyle. Ashley tells John-Boy about his travels and the adventures he's had on the road, and John-Boy begins to see that there is a whole world out there beyond Walton's Mountain.

Inspired by Ashley's stories and music, John-Boy decides to quit his job at the mill and join Ashley on the road as a traveling minstrel. He packs his bags and leaves a note for his family, explaining his decision.

As John-Boy and Ashley travel from town to town, they perform for audiences and share stories about their travels. John-Boy begins to feel more confident and alive than he has in years. He realizes that he is meant to be a writer, and he starts jotting down notes and ideas for stories.

Despite the excitement of life on the road, John-Boy begins to miss his family back home. He remembers the traditions and values that were instilled in him as a child, and he realizes that he wants to go back to Walton's Mountain and pursue his dream of becoming a writer there.

In the end, John-Boy bids farewell to Ashley and returns home to his family. He is greeted with open arms and he begins to pursue his dream of becoming a writer, using his experiences on the road as inspiration for his stories.
