As Ike displays his Roll of Honor, a list Walton’s Mountain men who are serving in the military, Verdie notices that the black men aren’t listed near the names of the white men, but fails to voice her displeasure in the arrangement of the names. Her displeasure mounts when Corabeth suggests that the black women on the mountain should form their own Ladies Auxiliary to show their support for the troops, and she mentions that they are already doing their part for the war effort. Elsewhere, Erin runs into Verdie’s daughter Esther when she is on her way home from J.D.’s plant. After working there for a few days, Erin finds working conditions difficult and soon suggests to J.D. that Esther would make the perfect personnel director, except he is hesitant to hire her because of her color. After the girls persuade him to hire her, Verdie confronts Ike and asks him to put her son’s name in its rightful spot or take it off the Roll of Honor all together.
