The Wildlife Docs team visits different wildlife sanctuaries that specialize in caring for different species of animals, and the focus is on the mothers and how they care for their young.
Viewers get an up-close and personal look at the mother-child relationship in different species, from the fierce lioness that fiercely protects her cubs, to the gentle manatee mother that carries around her calf for months. At the San Diego Zoo, Dr. Rebecca examines a mother gorilla and her newborn baby, assessing the baby's health and development. The zoo is also home to a breeding program for the critically endangered northern white rhino, and the team visits the rhinos to see how the mother and baby are being cared for.
Next, the team heads to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, where they take a look at mother dolphins and their calves. The dolphins are in captivity, and the team observes how the staff is constantly monitoring the mother and calf to ensure they receive the proper nutrition and care. They also meet with the staff at SeaWorld Orlando to learn about the training and enrichment programs that are in place to ensure the health and well-being of mother whales and their young.
Moving along to Yuma, Arizona, the team visits wildlife sanctuary Liberty Wildlife to learn about baby birds from tiny hummingbirds to big owls. Here the focus is on the foster mothers who take care of young birds that have lost or abandoned. Animal care staff explain how they feed, care, and ultimately return the birds to the wild mother or a safe habitat.
The Wildlife Docs also pay a visit to the world's only sloth hospital located in the Arenal Volcano region of Costa Rica. The facility sees an influx of young sloth orphans every year, and viewers discover how the hospital staff cares for the young sloths and gradually teaches them how to climb and care for themselves in the wild.
The episode then takes viewers across the Atlantic to South Africa's Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which is home to a special mother cheetah and her litter of cubs. The team observes how this incredible mother protects her cubs from predators, teaches them how to hunt, and eventually releases them back into their natural habitat.
Finally, The Wildlife Docs team shares a heartwarming story from the Santa Barbara Zoo about a giraffe mother that was separated from her calf shortly after it was born. The zoo staff stepped in and created a special program that trained the mother to take care of the baby, and viewers get to see the touching moment when the mother and calf are reunited.
Throughout the episode, viewers get a firsthand look at the remarkable bond between mother and child in the animal kingdom. It's clear that no matter what species, mothers will go above and beyond to ensure the well-being of their offspring.
