In the seventh episode of season one of The Wonder Years, titled "Independence Day," Kevin Arnold is excited for the Fourth of July festivities. However, tensions rise in the Arnold household as Jack Arnold's brother, Uncle Charley, comes to visit for the holiday.

Uncle Charley is a quadriplegic veteran who served in World War II, and his presence brings up painful memories for Jack. Kevin is initially intrigued by Uncle Charley, as he is the first person he's ever met with a disability, but soon realizes that his father and his uncle have a strained relationship.

Meanwhile, Kevin's older brother Wayne is more focused on impressing his girlfriend, Bonnie, than celebrating the holiday with his family. This leads to a series of humorous mishaps, including Wayne getting stuck in the garage door.

As the Fourth of July festivities continue, tensions come to a head between Jack and Uncle Charley. Kevin witnesses a heartfelt conversation between the brothers, where Jack opens up about his guilt for not being able to serve in the war and his fear of losing his own son to the military. This conversation brings a new understanding and closeness between the brothers.

Through this episode, The Wonder Years tackles themes of family, patriotism, and disability. It is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by veterans and the importance of bridging the gap between individuals with disabilities and those without.
