Watch This Fool

This Fool is a 30-minute comedy series that premiered on Hulu in August 2022. The show was created by stand-up comedian Chris Estrada and follows Julio Lopez, a 30-year-old who still lives at home with his family in South Central Los Angeles. Julio spends his days slacking off with his friends and working a dead-end job at a gang rehabilitation non-profit called Hugs Not Thugs. Even though Julio doesn't take life too seriously, he has a big heart and wants to do more with his life.

When Julio's older cousin returns home after being in prison for 10 years, he is tasked with getting his life together. This responsibility forces Julio to figure out what he wants for his own life. Julio has big dreams of being a famous rapper and making music with his friends, but he struggles to find the motivation and discipline to achieve those dreams. His family also wants him to settle down and start thinking about a real career.

The show highlights the day-to-day life of Julio and his Mexican-American family. There's his nurturing mother who babies him, his stern stepfather who wants Julio to grow up, and his prima donna sister who Julio has a love-hate relationship with. Family is very important to Julio, even if he doesn't always see eye-to-eye with them.

Julio and his friends like to spend time freestyle rapping and making music in the backyard, dreaming about making it big one day. But they also waste a lot of time coming up with get-rich quick schemes that never seem to pan out. Julio's loyalty to his neighborhood and friends often distracts him from figuring out his own path.

As the season progresses, Julio begrudgingly starts to re-examine his life and try to figure out what direction he wants to go in. Should he keep slacking off with his friends, or work hard to achieve his dreams? Will he continue avoiding responsibility and commitment, or step up to help provide for his family? Julio realizes he can't avoid the tough choices if he ever wants to grow up and make something of himself.

This Fool provides a humorous but thoughtful look at a young Latino man struggling to find purpose. With its mix of lighthearted comedy and family drama, the show offers an entertaining take on the quarter-life crisis journey many millennials face.
