Triple is a South Korean television series produced by Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) America in 2009. The story orbits around the interconnected lives of its central characters in the thrilling world of competitive figure skating. The series revolves around the central figure, Lee Haru, a vivacious and determined young woman who aspires to become an internationally acclaimed figure skater. Raised by her single father, Haru comes from modest beginnings. She finds work at an ice rink where, under the guidance of her coach, she starts her journey to become a successful figure skater.

The series showcases the journey of Haru as she battles numerous hurdles, pits and peaks of her journey, close losses, triumphant victories, betrayals, broken relationships, and a rich array of heroic achievements, all while portrayed amidst the competitive and demanding world of professional figure skating.

“Triple” exhibits a rich ensemble cast, each with their own compelling story arc. Kang Hae-yoon is a successful ad executive who harbors a secret love for her childhood friend Shin Hwal, a co-owner of the ice rink and a former speed skater. The cat's cradle of relationships entangles further as Hwal's estranged wife, Su-in, unexpectedly enters the narrative. Poong-ho, the naive and playful brother of Hye-yoon, also serves as a source of light-hearted comedic relief throughout the series.

The character dynamics are further enhanced by side characters like Joanne, Haru’s charismatic figure skating coach, and Hyun-tae, Shin Hwal’s roommate and business partner. While the primary focus is the protagonists, side characters often steal the limelight with their engaging subplots and captivating performances.

The series masterfully balances different narrative elements, such as romance, sports, melodrama, and comedy, to create an eventful yet heart-warming show that keeps the viewers hooked. Being set amidst the grueling and competitive world of figure skating allows “Triple” to canvass an extra layer of tension and drama to its narrative.

Visually, the series is a spectacle. The detailed portrayal of the professional sport of figure skating transports the viewers into the midst of larger than life stadiums, flashing lights, shimmering costumes, and awe-inspiring performances. The action on the ice rink adds a distinctive flavor, boosting the energy and appeal of the show.

The title “Triple” is a clever play on words, alluding not just to a type of jump performable under the challenging discipline of figure skating, but also signifying the interwoven triad-like relationship between the lead characters – Hwal, Su-in, and Hae-yoon.

The heart of the drama, however, lies in its depiction of human relationships. It dives deep into the complexity of emotions and relationships when put under the duress of dreams, ambitions, and circumstances. The intricate play of love, friendship, competition, jealousy, loss, and victory is all beautifully intertwined into populating the story to its brim.

The series resonates with real-life issues, such as career dilemmas, dealing with failures, personal sacrifices for ambition, the struggle for recognition, and the relentless pursuit of dreams, among others. While focusing on the fervent pursuit of dreams, it also addresses how these pursuits might exact a toll on personal relationships and how individuals navigate these labyrinthine situations.

The performances of the cast members are commendable. The actors seamlessly portrayed their emo-tionally laden characters, displaying a broad range of emotions and enhancing the viewer's connection with the characters. Further, a smartly scripted dialogue and a well-balanced screenplay strengthen the series.

“Triple” is a series that, although set in the glamourous world of professional figure skating, essentially remains a poignant portrayal of shifting human relationships, painstaking sacrifices, and unsinkable spirit in the face of adversity. It’s a show that beautifully amalgamates thrilling sports, complex emotions, and heart-moving relationships all into a single narrative. This unique mix makes it an exciting and compelling watch for the viewers. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride of emotions as “Triple” takes you on a journey through the complex world of competitive figure skating, life, love, dreams, and struggles.
