These two girls are down on their luck, and struggle to get by, working as waitresses while trying to get their dreams of a cupcake business off the ground.
The story is set in Brooklyn, New York, and has captivated audiences since its pilot episode in September of 2011. Single, twenty-something, Max comes from an average working-class family. Meanwhile, Caroline was born into a wealthy family who is left with nothing when her father is exposed as a crooked business man. Their boss, Han Lee is played by Matthew Moy, while Jonathan Kite plays Oleg, an overactive and sometimes inappropriate cook from Ukraine. The girls also work with Earl, an elderly cashier played by Garrett Morris, and their part time supervisor Sophie, played by Jennifer Coolidge. Apart from waiting tables, Max also works part-time, caring for twin babies. Max's second employer is Peach Landis, played by Brooke Lyons, who also adopts Caroline's horse, Chestnut, during the first season. At the close of each episode, audiences receive an update as to how much progress the girls have made toward their $250,000 goal.

Later Caroline tells Max she called her old school and found out that Max only didn't graduate because she skipped one class final. He invites them out to the horse track turf club. Max and Caroline revel at the turf club, enjoying the free food. Caroline talks Max into letting her bet, familiar with racing.
Someone's phone is ringing, and it's confusing both girls. They realize it's the landline. Max hangs it up. She says it must have been the landlord, the lease is up for renewal. Caroline answers when it rings again - and Max tells her they're not on the lease. Caroline hangs up. Max panics that they're subletting illegally, though Caroline thinks maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to get kicked out of their terrible apartment. Max finds the original lease, under a Lester Donovan.
Max wants to close up the cucpcake shop early but Caroline insists they stay open. A rich woman (guest star Lindsay Lohan) and her fiance run up to the window. It turns out she got her engagement ring in one of their cupcakes. She decides the girls should do her wedding cake instead of what she had planned, and comes in to talk with them. Max isn't thrilled about the idea, having never done a cake before, but Caroline thinks they can get quite a bit of money out of it. Claire comes around.
It's St. Patrick's Day at the cupcake shop, and business is good. However, not as good as Caroline expected, by the end of the night. They do have a little surplus of money, but Caroline refuses to spend it. Max wants to go bar hopping with Han and Oleg, since Deke is out skiing with his family. However, there is so much traffic outside, their cab gets stuck in the parade and they're unable to get to the bars. Finally, they decide to walk. Han does well with the ladies as everyone wants to take a picture with the "leprechaun.
Things are getting serious between Deke and Max. Caroline tells her she should go on the pill so she doesn't have to keep bumming condoms off of people. Max is resistant to the idea but finally does get the pill, a major step for her. Chef Nicolas comes to the diner to see Caroline. He begs her to come to his house to get to know him better over dinner. He tells her that his wife and him have an open relationship, and she is okay with him having relations with Caroline. She doesn't believe him, and he tells her she can speak with his wife via Skype.
Han happily informs the girls it's time for spring cleaning in the diner. Both Max and Caroline attempt to get out of their chores. Chef Nicolas comes in to see Caroline. She sends Max out with an excuse to avoid speaking with him. He texts Caroline and invites her to dinner. She texts him she'll have dinner with him when he leaves his wife. At class, Deke has the flu. When class is over, Caroline rushes in, determined to avoid Nicolas. It doesn't work, he finds her before she can escape.
Han celebrates getting an ATM at the diner. Max and Caroline sneak out the back door so Max can break into Deke's dumpster. She wants to sneak in and take back all her stuff so she can stop seeing him. Max makes Caroline go through the window and get her the keys. Max talks about Deke the whole time as she goes in to her her things, and Caroline wonders why she's breaking up at all. Caroline notices Max is getting her toothbrush and a gnome, indicating how serious she was about Deke.

Max and Deke perform well during the cake decorating competition, hoping for the prize: a free week of class. Max lays the final flower in place before time runs out, and Nic declares them the winner. Excited, Max and Deke blurt out that they love each other. Max goes to Caroline's room requesting girl talk, and admits that she told Deke she loves him.
Fed up with a car that has been parking outside the cupcake shop and scaring away customers, Caroline finally asks them to relocate. They throw a cupcake at her. She has it towed. Earl informs her it's also known as "Murder Car." Han informs her someone with a teardrop tattoo was looking for Caroline, so he gave him her number. Deke comes to the diner to ask Max on an official date, which she accepts, despite telling Caroline they are just make-out buddies. Caroline is upset to be left alone as Max leaves for her date, sure that she is being stalked by the owner of the Murder Car.
Caroline insists upon keeping the cupcake shop open even though there is a blizzard outside. The snowplow propels snow directly through the window. No one is coming into the diner either. Han hasn't even been able to make it in. Max, however, has Deke in the back studying with her. Deke and Max are studying, but it's not going well. Deke recommends they ask the girl next to them in class, Judy (with the big butt), for assistance. Caroline, aside, asks Max if it bothers her when Deke talks about other girls around her.

Han interrupts Max's conversation, and Deke invites her to continue it the next evening over drinks. Caroline also has an invitiation from Chef to get a drink with him after dinner the next day.
Caroline tries to figure out their schedule for work, cupcakes, and school. At work, the group throws a surprise party for Max's first day of school. Tomorrow begins the first day of the rest of her life! They present her with a book bag for school, full of other supplies for class. Caroline, a little upset none of the attention is on her, continues to remind them that she'll be working at the school. Max is touched, but Caroline is not pleased none of the gifts are for her. On the subway however, someone steals Max's nice new bag.

Caroline wants to leave when the cleaning lady arrives, but Max wants to stay and observe. Sophie comes and introduces cleaning lady, one-armed Paulina. Max wants to know how it happened, and Sophie admits she drove over Paulina's arm with her truck. The sassy lady gets to work. Feeling bad, Caroline offers to help her, and they lift Max's mattress to flip it.
Max and Caroline's cupcake shop is doing really well, especially with the gay population. Probably because Max is catfishing on Grindr to draw them in. Another day, Caroline comes into work, thrilled that she met a surfer guy. She gets a text from him, inviting her to a new trendy restaurant. Caroline gets Luis to cover for her the next day so she can go out with him. Han overhears and wants to know how to make his diner the new "it" place. Unlikely. Caroline is ready for her date, but she plans to take a car home, and Max tells her they can't afford it.
