Angelic Layer is an anime series that was originally released in Japan before being translated for English speaking audiences. This anime, or Japanese animation show, was based off of a successful manga, or Japanese comic, written by the famous manga writing team, Clamp. The series centers around a girl named Misaki Suzuhara. Misaki is estranged from her mother, and goes to live with an aunt in Tokyo. While there, Misaki witness the grand game known as Angelic Layer, and becomes fascinated with it.

Angelic Layer is a game played with battle dolls that are known as angels. The angels are constructed and mentally controlled by their owners, called Deus. The Deus must spend a great deal of time and effort in creating a strong doll that can win many battles. Each battle is played on an expensive field known as the layer. Misaki is taken with the game when she first sees Athena, one of the most famous dolls, battling on television.

Misaki is sure that she can't create her own doll, but a mysterious benefactor, named Icchan, appears and pushes Misaki towards building and competing in the Angelic Layer game. Soon, Misaki has constructed a unique doll that she names Hikaru. Misaki and Hikaru quickly begin training for the competitions that will take place within the Angelic Layer game.

As she begins her gaming career, Misaki is also starting over at a new school. At her special school, Misaki meets several new and interesting friends, including an extremely intelligent kindergartener, who is also a Deus. As the series progresses, Misaki learns more about herself and her friends, both in school and on the Angelic Layer. In addition, Misaki also begins to unravel the secrets of her past, learning more about what happened to her mother and how she is intricately connected to the game and the battle doll Athena.
