Angelic Layer is a 26-episode Japanese anime television series produced by studio Bones and directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori. The show is based on the shonen manga series of the same name by Clamp. The story revolves around a young girl named Misaki Suzuhara who moves to Tokyo to live with her aunt. While exploring the city, she stumbles upon a mysterious arena where people control small, doll-like robots called Angels through a mental connection known as "Angelic Layer". Fascinated by the game, Misaki decides to try her hand at it, and quickly becomes one of the top players.

As Misaki navigates the competitive world of Angelic Layer, she makes new friends and rivals, and uncovers a dark conspiracy involving the creator of the game and his mysterious organization known as "The Icchan Foundation". Along the way, she also learns valuable life lessons about friendship, courage, and self-discovery.

The cast of Angelic Layer is led by Ayako Kawasumi as Misaki Suzuhara, the plucky and determined protagonist who dreams of becoming the best Angelic Layer player in Japan. Other notable members include Chiemi Chiba as Hatoko Kobayashi, Misaki's best friend and fellow player; Kikuko Inoue as Shuko Suzuhara, Misaki's aunt and a renowned computer scientist; and Houko Kuwashima as Tamayo Kizaki, a former Angelic Layer champion who becomes Misaki's mentor.

The show also features a number of memorable supporting characters, such as Jun Fukuyama as Koutarou Kobayashi, Hatoko's older brother and a skilled hacker; Masaya Onosaka as Kotarou Kobayashi, a famous Angelic Layer commentator who provides comic relief; Yuri Shiratori as Kaede Saito, Misaki's main rival and a cunning strategist; and Yui Horie as Suzuka Misaki, a mysterious girl with ties to The Icchan Foundation.

Throughout the series, viewers are treated to stunning animation and exhilarating action sequences as the Angels battle it out in the arena. The show also explores deeper themes, such as the nature of consciousness and the ethics of artificial intelligence.

With the nationals coming her way, Misaki feels nervous, but a surprise visit from her friends changes all that. Oujiro's gift to her makes Kotaro jealous as Misaki's Mother struggles to bring herself to visit her daughter. On top of all that, Misaki learns that she must choose a Second to participate with her in the Nationals. Hatoko wishes to be that person badly, but does she have a chance with so many people asking Misaki?

The Fujisaki sisters are pretty popular in the Layer, but they have a personal grudge against Hatoko and Suzuka; each vowing not to lose at any cost until they face her again in the Layer. Nervous about Hikaru's progression, Arisu plants a device on Hikaru that cuts her off from Misaki now and again, causing her to freeze up and falter on the Layer.

The regional tournament has started and Misaki learns that, not only is she fighting against pop singer Ringo Seto, but she can't afford to lose just once or she'll be out of the tournament for good. To make things worse, Ringo's Angel Ranga has a special attack, the Dance of Death, that threatens to blow Hikaru right out of the Layer!

Feeling unsure of herself still in terms of whether or not she can make it in the regional tournament, Misaki finds comfort in Ringo Seto's words and finally feels ready for the regionals.

Her devastating loss against Suzuka has left Misaki afraid to enter the heat of battle again, fearing for Hikaru's safety. However, while fighting against Maria, a girl who believes that her Angel Tsubaki is all that she has in life, Misaki realizes that Hatoko meant no harm at all and that Angelic Layer is meant to be fun.
