Elfen Lied is a psychological horror anime series that revolves around the concept of supernatural beings called Diclonii and their interactions with humans. The show is set in present-day Japan, where Diclonii are the next stage in human evolution but are also feared and threatened by humans because of their potent abilities.

The story follows Lucy, a young Diclonius girl with incredible telekinetic powers and aggressive tendencies. After escaping from a research facility that used her as a test subject and subjected her to cruel experiments, Lucy is injured and washed ashore. However, she suffers from amnesia and can't remember her past. She meets Kouta, a college student, and his cousin Yuka, who take her in, and Lucy starts living with them. Over time, Lucy's memories begin to resurface, and she learns the truth about her past and the world around her.

As the story unfolds, a variety of characters, both human and Diclonius, are introduced. Nana, a young Diclonius girl with horns, is sent to capture Lucy by the research facility. However, Nana has a change of heart and instead becomes an ally of Kouta and Yuka. Kurama, the head of the research facility, is both feared and respected for his ambition and intelligence, but he struggles with his guilt and the consequences of his actions. Mayu, a young girl, is rescued by Kouta and Yuka after suffering from abuse in her past. She begins to bond with them and becomes an essential member of their group.

Throughout the series, the theme of discrimination and persecution is heavily explored. The Diclonii are seen as monsters and are hunted down by humans, often leading to violence and tragedy. Lucy, despite her peaceful intentions, is frequently provoked and attacked by humans, which fuels her anger and desire for vengeance. Similarly, the humans in the show face severe consequences for their cruelty and violence towards the Diclonii, leading to a cycle of violence and tragedy.

Elfen Lied is known for its graphic violence and explicit content, which includes nudity and sexual themes. However, these elements are used to convey the story's themes and characters' emotions and are not gratuitous. The show also explores heavy psychological themes, such as trauma, guilt, and identity, which are often explored through the show's characters' thoughts and motivations.

The animation style of Elfen Lied is notable for its detailed character designs and use of vibrant coloring. The backgrounds are often dark and ominous, setting the show's tone and providing an excellent backdrop for the violent and intense action sequences. The show's opening theme, "Lilium," has been praised for its haunting melody and lyrics, which reflect the show's themes and characters.

Elfen Lied is a show that is not for the faint of heart but is a rare example of an anime that explores heavy psychological themes and incorporates them into its storytelling. The show is a must-watch for fans of horror and psychological thrillers, and its unique story and characters make it stand out from other anime in the genre.

Elfen Lied is a series that is currently running and has 2 seasons (15 episodes). The series first aired on July 25, 2004.
