Favorite

How I Met Your Mother is a unique take on the standard sitcom format. Told mostly through flashbacks, the show is framed around Ted Mosby telling his children the story about how he and their mother met many years prior. The show focuses on a younger Ted Mosby and the funny antics he and his friends get involved in on their quests for love, happiness and fulfillment.

Ted Mosby is the main character and a romantic sort with a razor sharp wit and a propensity for getting into awkward situations. Lily and Marshall are his college friends and, at one time, roommates. They provide a real backbone of warmth to the show with their goofy antics and deep love for one another. Robin is a new addition to the group of friends and is also a one-time romantic interest for Ted. Robin's Canadian heritage and very unfeminine demeanor are the basis of many humorous situations on the show. Last, but not least, is Barney, a slick womanizer who hides a gentle heart behind his smirk and rapid fire one liners.

Over the course of the show, the five friends get themselves involved in a wide array of hilarious situations. From Ted stealing a restaurant decoration to show his love for Robin to Barney's endless array of quips and his string of conquests to the amusing disaster of Lily and Marshall's wedding day, the group experiences many funny events. Yet, there is also a strong heart to the show as it deals with dramatic themes like break-ups, the death of parents and struggles with infertility.

The flash forwards as Ted talks to his kids are also amusing in their own right as the children, despite their short amount of screen time, even have well-developed personalities. Getting to see the futures of your favorite characters also provides a counterpoint to the comedy and drama of the show's present time line.

Overall, the balance of wicked humor with a strong emotional core in How I Met Your Mother creates a show that will make you laugh, make you cry and definitely give you a few good laughs.

CBS Passes on 'How I Met Your Dad' and Alyson Hannigan

For awhile, it looked like the legacy of "How I Met Your Mother" would live on, as CBS ordered pilots of both a "HIMYM" spin-off and a new sitcom starring Alyson Hannigan. When the network announced its fall schedule this week, though, all traces of "HIMYM" were absent.

'How I Met Your Dad' Officially Gets a Series Order

It's official: "How I Met Your Dad" is a go! The "How I Met Your Mother" spinoff was given a series order today by CBS, as announced by the network. Until this point, the show was only in its pilot stages and had not officially been picked up by CBS, though considering the long-running success of "HIMYM," it was a close to a sure thing as it gets. The show will star indie darling Greta Gerwig as Sally, a girl in her late twenties who will act as our female Ted Moesby.

Alyson Hannigan Wishes 'How I Met Your Mother' Finale Was Just a Little Different

Most people who didn't like the "How I Met Your Mother" finale wanted it to be less sad. But star Alyson Hannigan wanted just the opposite! In a recent interview, Hannigan (who plays Lily on the show) revealed that there was one key shot missing from the "HIMYM" series finale: The Mother's funeral. Apparently there was originally a scene of only just a second or two during Ted's speech that showed him mourning over Tracy's death at her funeral, but the scene was deleted from the final product since it was "just too gut-wrenching.

You know that "How I Met Your Mother" ending that you hated? Well, Neil Patrick Harris loved it. "It wasn't necessarily the happy ending people were expecting," Harris said.

'How I Met Your Mother' Creator Promises Alternate Ending on DVD Set

Here's some good news for "How I Met Your Mother" fans: That controversial ending might not be the only one there is. Carter Bays, one of the long-running CBS sitcom's creators, took to Twitter about a week after the ending that put fans in an uproar to answer questions. Naturally, he got a lot of questions about the rather sad and, to most fans, disappointing series finale episode.

'How I Met Your Mother' Fan 'Fixes' Ending: Watch the Video!

What a difference an edit makes! After the finale episode of "How I Met Your Mother" ended, Facebook and Twitter—nay, the whole Internet—was mad about it. And so were we. Rightfully so, too: Not only was the episode unnecessarily sad, it also seemed to argue semantics to deliver an ending that fans were told repeatedly over the past nine seasons they wouldn't be getting.

How I Failed Your Mother: Successful Finales and How 'HIMYM' Got It Wrong

At least "How I Met Your Mother" exited by getting everyone talking. If only they were saying nice things instead of talking about how awful the series finale was. Is there any way that a popular TV series can end and not disappoint fans? The short answer: yes. It can be done, just not the way that the creators of "HIMYM" tried to do it.

'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9, Episode 23 Recap: 'Last Forever'

We all knew it was coming, but that didn't make the end of "How I Met Your Mother" any easier. Neither did the fact that the finale could go down in history as one of the most unpopular last episodes of a popular series, like, ever.

'How I Met Your Mother' Season 9, Episode 22 Recap: 'The End of the Aisle'

This week's episode of "How I Met Your Mother" laid to rest two of the series' best running jokes--the Slap Bet and the Ring Bear--but it also put a cap on a several-seasons-long story arc with the marriage of Barney and Robin. All that remains is the story promised in the series' title, and conveniently, there's one more episode left in which to tell it.
