Luther is a psychological crime series that stars Idris Elba. It is filmed in Great Britain and follows an English detective, Luther, as he tries to solve mysteries. Luther works for the Serious Crime Unit where he is a dedicated and hardworking police officer. Luther is more than just an ordinary police officer, however. Luther is actually a genius and he also has many obsessive tendencies that help him solve crimes but also cause him difficulty in his personal life.

Luther struggles with the problem of becoming obsessed with the crimes that he is investigating. He becomes wrapped up in the violent and dark nature of the world that he investigates and ends up letting it bleed over into his personal life. The biggest problem that his obsessed nature has caused Luther has been the end of his marriage. While he is still very much in love with his ex-wife and wants to get back together with her, his workaholic ways are preventing the marriage from healing.

Luther also struggles a bit with his ethics. When he needs to, he will tell white lies or manipulate facts in order to close a case. Luther meets his match when he encounters murder suspect Alice Morgan. Alice also shares the same obsessed psychological nature that Luther does but instead of being a cop, she is a double murderer. She and Luther become involved in a dangerous game of cat and mouse with each of them doing their best to outwit the other.

All of Luther's fellow police officers and his supervisors are worried that Luther's tactics will get the entire force in trouble. His unorthodox method of solving crimes could expose him to sanctions or forced removal from a case. Luther is impatient with the slow nature of the criminal justice system and he does his best to subvert the entire process while bringing criminals to justice in his own way.
