Ep 3. Keeping the Faith

Royal Pains is a medical drama that follows the story of Dr. Hank Lawson, a talented and successful emergency room doctor in New York City. However, after he is blamed for the death of an important patient, his world comes crashing down. Suddenly unemployed, Hank finds himself in the Hamptons, working as a sort of concierge doctor for the wealthy and elite. Along with his knowledgeable and tech-savvy brother Evan, Hank navigates the world of high-stakes medicine and characters with unique and interesting medical conditions.

Season 2 of the show continues to follow the Lawson brothers as they work to gain a foothold in the Hamptons medical community. In episode 3, entitled "Keeping the Faith," the brothers are faced with an interesting case. A young woman named Faith has come to the Hamptons from Montana, seeking treatment for a mysterious illness.

Faith is a devout follower of an alternative religion that eschews modern medicine, instead preferring to rely on herbal remedies and faith healing. Despite her beliefs, Faith is clearly very ill and needs medical attention. Hank is initially reluctant to take her case, as he feels conflicted about treating someone who doesn't believe in medicine. However, he ultimately decides to help Faith, realizing that her beliefs are deeply held and deserve respect.

As Hank begins to treat Faith, he runs into some unexpected roadblocks. Her religion prohibits her from receiving certain treatments and medications, leading Hank to get creative with his treatment plan. Evan, meanwhile, is thrilled to have a chance to work with a new group of potential customers: Faith's fellow church members. He sets about trying to sell them on his latest business venture: the installation of high-end outdoor kitchens for their luxurious mansions.

Throughout the episode, Faith's condition worsens despite Hank's best efforts. He begins to suspect that there is more to her illness than meets the eye and enlists the help of his colleague Dr. Jill Casey to get to the bottom of it. In the end, it is their combined medical expertise that is able to save Faith's life.

Over the course of the episode, the characters grapple with issues of faith, medicine, and the intersection of the two. Hank is forced to confront his own biases and preconceptions about alternative medicine and religion, while Evan discovers that the wealthy residents of the Hamptons are not always receptive to his business pitches. Through it all, the Lawson brothers remain committed to their patients and their craft, even in the face of difficult and unusual cases.
