Joey Fatone of N'Sync hosted the game show when it aired on NBC. Comedian, Melissa Peterman, hosts the show on CMT. Each episode consists of six contestants. The contestants are randomly selected from the audience based on how well they know the lyrics to the song being played.

In round one, Melissa gives the contestants the year, artist, and name of the song. The contestant must get the next line of the song correctly in order to move forward. The contestants who win round one will move on to round two. The players are then divided into pairs. The players must unscramble the lyrics and beat their opponents to move on in the game.

The final two contestants move on to the chorus show down. Instead of just getting a line of a song correct, the player must know the entire chorus of the song. The player who gets the chorus right first will be the winner of the game. The winner moves on to the final countdown. This is the last round where all the money can be won. The contestant gets seven songs, and each song is worth $5,000 if said correctly. If the player gets five songs correct, then they will get $50,000. There are three strikes in the final countdown. When the contestant misses a song, then a strike is taking away.
