The Big Wedding

"It's never too late to start acting like a family"

The Big Wedding is a comedic film starring Robert de Niro, Robin Williams and Susan Sarandon. The film is about a divorced couple, Don and Ellie. Don and Ellie's adopted son is getting married to a woman from a conservative family. Don and Ellie want to help their son make a good impression, and they do not want his future in-laws to know that he comes from a broken home. They decide they will pretend to be still married to each other for the wedding weekend.

Don and Ellie's son still has a relationship with his biological mother, and he invites her to attend the wedding as well. She is a beautiful woman from Colombia, and she has no idea that Don and Ellie got divorced. Many of the other friends and family members that attend the wedding are confused by all the antics of Don and Ellie. Some family members think the couple have reunited and are happy for them. Others can see that they are faking it and are confused.

Complications also arise when Don's current girlfriend gets upset with the situation and refuses to play along. She makes scene after scene at the gathering and ends up telling people that she and Don are having an affair. Don's girlfriend also used to be Ellie's best friend, and she basically broke up their marriage so there are a lot of complications and tensions between those two. Also, in addition to their adopted son, Don and Ellie have two other adult children who are greatly amused by their parents being forced to pretend they are married again. The fake marriage also is noticed by the priest who must perform the wedding, and he has a lot of advice for the couples.
