Detective Michael Britten navigates through two different realities after surviving a car accident. In one reality, his wife Hannah is alive, and in the other, his son Rex is alive. Britten is able to use information from each reality to help solve cases in the other. In season 1 episode 8, entitled "Nightswimming," Britten investigates the murder of a young woman who was found drowned in the swimming pool at a prestigious Beverly Hills country club.

In one reality, Britten is working with his partner in the LAPD, Isaiah "Bird" Freeman, to solve the case. They quickly discover that the victim, Lila, had been drinking heavily the night before her death and had multiple sexual partners. They question her friends and family and learn that Lila was trying to get into an exclusive L.A. social circle called "The Swans" and was willing to do whatever it took to gain entry.

In the other reality, Britten is working with his therapist, Dr. John Lee, to solve the case. Dr. Lee urges Britten to explore his memories and emotions surrounding water and swimming, but Britten is hesitant to do so. He does, however, have a breakthrough when he remembers a childhood incident in which he rescued a boy from drowning.

As Britten continues to investigate the case in both realities, he faces challenges from his colleagues and loved ones who are unaware of his unique situation. In one reality, Bird is suspicious of Britten's unconventional methods and challenges his credibility as a detective. In the other reality, Britten's wife Hannah becomes frustrated with his emotional distance and lack of communication.

As the investigation progresses, Britten discovers that Lila's death may be connected to a larger conspiracy involving The Swans and their wealthy and influential members. He also confronts his own past and comes to a greater understanding of himself and his relationship to water and swimming.

"Nightswimming" is a tense and emotionally charged episode that explores themes of identity, memory, and the nature of reality. Britten's journey in both realities is compelling and thought-provoking, and the murder mystery plot keeps viewers guessing until the very end. With strong performances from the cast and sharp writing, "Nightswimming" is a standout episode of Awake's first season.
