In the 29th episode of Batman's first season, titled "The Bookworm Turns," Gotham City faces a new foe in the form of a brilliant and bookish villain named the Bookworm. With his vast knowledge of literature, the Bookworm has embarked on a dangerous crime spree and it is up to Batman and Robin to put an end to his schemes.
The episode begins with the Bookworm (played by Roddy McDowall) stealing priceless books and manuscripts from the Gotham City Public Library. His plan is to use the rare tomes as leverage to secure a hefty ransom from the City. As Batman and Robin conduct their investigation, they discover that the Bookworm has left behind clues in the form of riddles based on classic literature, in order to taunt the Caped Crusaders.
Meanwhile, Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara decide to hire the Bookworm to catalog the Gotham City Police Department's rare book collection in an effort to keep him occupied and out of trouble. However, as Robin observes, it was risky to let a criminal into a police station unsupervised, and this ends up being a crucial mistake.
The Bookworm begins to wreak havoc on the police department's book collection and tries to attract Batman's attention by stealing the Library of Congress' copy of Ivanhoe. After a showdown with Batman and Robin, the Bookworm manages to escape by slipping away in a car disguised as a bookmobile.
As the duo continue their search for the Bookworm, they realize that he's using a giant drill to burrow into the Batcave itself. The episode ends with Batman and Robin finally capturing the Bookworm and bringing him to justice. Along the way, the episode is filled with literary references and puns, making it a fun and entertaining adventure for fans of both Batman and classic books.
Overall, "The Bookworm Turns" is a classic episode of the original Batman series, with a charismatic villain and an entertaining plot that keeps the audience engaged throughout. It's a must-watch for any fan of the Caped Crusader, and a great introduction to the series for newcomers.
