In season 5 episode 9 of Beat Bobby Flay, titled "Do or Die," two talented chefs compete for the chance to go head-to-head with Bobby Flay. The first competitor is Chef Jameelah Abdul-Mateen, originally from New Orleans and now living in Atlanta. She started cooking at a young age and has since honed her skills in some of Atlanta's top restaurants. Her signature dish is a spicy shrimp and grits, and she is known for incorporating bold flavors into her cooking.
The second competitor is Chef Darren Carbone, who hails from Staten Island and now owns his own catering company. He has a passion for Italian cuisine and likes to put his own modern twist on classic dishes. His signature dish is a potato and bacon frittata, which he says is a crowd-pleaser.
For the first round of the competition, the two chefs have to create their own signature dish in just 20 minutes. They both dive right in, with Jameelah preparing her shrimp and grits while Darren opts for a twist on classic carbonara pasta. The judges take their time tasting both dishes before ultimately declaring Jameelah the winner.
In the second round, Jameelah and Bobby face off in a head-to-head competition. The secret ingredient for this round is revealed to be duck, and the two chefs have just 45 minutes to create their own unique dishes using this ingredient. Bobby goes for a classic French duck confit with lentils while Jameelah opts for a more Southern-inspired dish of fried duck with collard greens and a blackberry sauce.
The judges taste both dishes and ultimately declare Jameelah the winner, earning her the chance to go up against Bobby in the final round of the competition. For this round, they both have to create their own variation of a classic Italian dish: eggplant Parmesan. Bobby goes for a classic version with fresh mozzarella and a homemade tomato sauce while Jameelah opts for a more modern twist with a crispy fried eggplant and a spicy tomato sauce.
The judges taste both dishes and declare Jameelah the winner, making her the champion of the episode. Bobby congratulates her on her win and praises her for her bold flavors and creative twists on classic dishes.
