In the season 10 premiere of Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations, host Andrew Zimmern takes viewers on a culinary journey through The Bronx, one of New York City's five boroughs. Known for being a melting pot of cultures, The Bronx offers a diverse range of foods and flavors.
Zimmern starts his journey at the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, also known as the "real Little Italy." Here, he explores the Italian-American cuisine that has been a staple in The Bronx for generations. From fresh mozzarella to cured meats, Zimmern discovers the traditional recipes and techniques that have been passed down through families for years.
Next, Zimmern heads to City Island, a small community that feels like a New England fishing village, to try the seafood. He meets with local fishermen who take him out on their boats to catch some of the freshest seafood in the area. From oysters to clams to lobster, Zimmern samples it all and learns about the fishing industry in the area.
Moving on to the Pelham Bay area, Zimmern explores the Latin American food scene. He tries authentic Mexican street tacos, stuffed with meats like al pastor and carnitas, as well as traditional Colombian empanadas. Zimmern also visits a New York City institution, the Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill, to taste some Jamaican beef patties.
Zimmern then checks out the Albanian community in The Bronx. He visits a family-owned bakery that specializes in burek, a traditional Balkan pastry filled with cheese, meat, or vegetables. He also tries qofte, Albanian meatballs, and learns about the influence of Albanian culture in the area.
In the South Bronx, Zimmern explores the soul food scene. He visits a local restaurant that has been serving up classic dishes like fried chicken and collard greens for over 50 years. Zimmern also tries a dish called smothered turkey neck, which is slow-cooked until tender in a tomato-based gravy.
Finally, Zimmern heads to the Hunts Point Terminal Produce Market, the largest wholesale produce market in the world. Here, he discovers the importance of fresh produce in the local cuisine and tries some unique fruits and vegetables like rambutan and cactus pear.
Throughout the episode, Zimmern not only tries the delicious food The Bronx has to offer but also meets the local chefs, fishermen, and vendors who make it all happen. He learns about the rich history and cultural diversity of the area and how it has influenced the cuisine.
Overall, The Bronx episode of Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations is a mouthwatering journey through one of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods.
