Andrew Zimmern takes viewers on a culinary adventure along the historic Route 66 in the fourth episode of the seventeenth season of Bizarre Foods. Starting off in Chicago, he embarks on a 2,400-mile journey across eight states to discover the unique and sometimes bizarre foods that can be found along this iconic American highway.
In the first leg of his trip, Andrew visits a local Greek community in Chicago and samples their traditional dishes, including octopus and lamb testicles. He then heads to St. Louis to try some BBQ, including smoked pastrami and burnt ends. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, he discovers a popular local snack called the "Garbage Frito," which is made up of Fritos chips topped with chili, cheese, and other toppings.
As Andrew heads further west, he stops in Amarillo, Texas, to try the famous 72-ounce steak challenge at The Big Texan Steak Ranch. He then crosses into New Mexico to sample some Hatch green chiles, a regional specialty. In Winslow, Arizona, he visits a Navajo reservation and tries their staple food, fry bread.
Continuing on his journey, Andrew travels through the Mojave Desert and stops at a fruit stand where he tries unique citrus fruits, such as the Buddha's Hand citron. He then heads to Los Angeles and visits a strip mall filled with Vietnamese eateries, where he samples dishes such as snails and bone marrow pho.
The final leg of Andrew's road trip takes him to Santa Monica, California, where he discovers a local sushi restaurant that serves up sea urchin and jellyfish sushi. He then ends his journey at the famous In-N-Out Burger chain, where he tries the secret menu items, including a 4x4 burger.
Throughout the episode, Andrew meets with locals and experts to learn about the history and culture behind each dish. He also showcases the unique landscapes and landmarks that can be found along Route 66, making this episode not only a culinary journey but also a visual one.
