In the seventeenth episode of season 2009 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, titled "Homestyle," host Guy Fieri explores restaurants that serve up comfort food just like grandma used to make.
The episode kicks off with a visit to a joint in Omaha, Nebraska called Dixie Quicks, where Guy samples their famous short ribs and grits. The short ribs are slow-cooked to perfection and served over a bed of creamy grits, making for a hearty and satisfying dish. Next up, Guy heads to San Diego, California to check out The Trails Eatery, where he tries their famous pumpkin pancakes. These fluffy pancakes are bursting with autumn flavors and are topped with whipped cream and maple syrup, making for the perfect breakfast treat.
Moving on to Dallas, Texas, Guy visits Mama's Daughter's Diner, a family-owned restaurant that's been serving up homestyle cooking since 1958. Here, Guy tries the chicken and dumplings, a classic comfort food dish made with tender chicken and fluffy dumplings in a rich broth. Next, Guy heads to Boston, Massachusetts for a taste of Italian comfort food at Galleria Umberto. This family-owned bakery and pizzeria has been serving up their famous Sicilian-style pizza for over 40 years, and Guy can't resist taking a bite.
In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Guy stops by a local legend, The Frontier Restaurant, which has been serving up Southwestern-style comfort food since 1971. Here, Guy tries the famous breakfast burrito, which is stuffed with eggs, bacon, potatoes, and green chilies and smothered in cheese and green chile sauce. The dish is a local favorite and it's not hard to see why.
Finally, Guy heads to Cambridge, Massachusetts to visit Christina's Homemade Ice Cream. This family-owned ice cream shop has been whipping up small-batch, homemade ice cream for over 30 years. Guy tries the famous burnt sugar ice cream, which has a rich, caramel flavor that's hard to resist.
Throughout the episode, Guy pays homage to the classic comfort foods that we all know and love. From short ribs and grits to pumpkin pancakes and chicken and dumplings, these dishes are sure to warm your heart and soul. So grab a plate, pull up a chair, and join Guy as he explores the homestyle cooking that has been satisfying stomachs for generations.
