In the fifth episode of the 2010 season of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, viewers are treated to a culinary adventure as host Guy Fieri takes on a new set of diners and restaurants, all recommended by fans. The episode, titled "By Request," features some of the best-loved eateries in America, from classic diners to funky dives.

The episode opens on Pop's Beef and Italian Sausage, a family-owned establishment in Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood. Here, Fieri meets the third-generation owner, who shows him how they make their own Italian sausages and Italian beef. Fieri chows down on a classic beef sandwich, piled high with roast beef, peppers, and onions, and dressed with a tangy giardiniera. As he bites into the sandwich, he savors the juicy beef and the blend of flavors in the spicy sauce.

Next, Fieri heads to the West Coast for a visit to The Benton Brothers in Portland, Oregon. This small, unassuming sandwich shop is famous for its Vietnamese-style bánh mì sandwiches, which are crafted with a variety of fresh ingredients and pickled vegetables. Fieri tries the classic pork bánh mì, stuffed with slices of roasted pork, pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro, jalapeños, and a smear of mayonnaise. He describes the sandwich as an explosion of flavors in his mouth, with the perfect balance of sweet, salty, and sour.

The third stop on Fieri's food tour takes him to The Grilled Cheese Truck, a mobile eatery in Los Angeles that serves up gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches. The truck's founder shows Fieri how they make their signature sandwich, which is filled with cheddar, goat, and jack cheeses, along with caramelized onions, bacon, and roasted garlic aioli. As Fieri takes a bite, he raves about the gooey, melty cheese and the smoky bacon, declaring it a perfect comfort food that satisfies every craving.

Moving on to Austin, Texas, Fieri visits Franklin Barbecue, one of the most revered barbecue joints in the country. Here, he meets pitmaster Aaron Franklin, who shows him the slow-smoking process and introduces him to their signature brisket. Fieri tries a slice of the succulent, smoky meat, and describes it as the best he's ever tasted, with a crispy exterior that gives way to tender, juicy meat.

The fifth and final stop on Fieri's journey is BopNgrill in Chicago, a Korean-American fusion restaurant that puts a delicious spin on classic dishes. Fieri tries their signature Umami Burger, which is made with a juicy beef patty topped with a savory blend of shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, and melted American cheese. He also samples their addictive kimchi fries, which feature crispy, golden fries covered in tangy, spicy Kimchi and a drizzle of aioli.

Throughout the episode, Fieri's enthusiasm for the food and his appreciation for the passionate chefs and owners is palpable. By showcasing some of the best-loved restaurants in America – all fan-recommended – the show celebrates the unique and diverse culinary landscape of the country while highlighting the incredible people behind the food. The result is a mouthwatering, entertaining, and inspiring episode that leaves viewers hungry for more.
