Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Season 2012 Episode 28 Flavortown Medley

  • October 1, 2012

Located in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, Guy Fieri is on the look-out for a veritable smorgasbord of flavors from all over the world in this episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. And he is not disappointed! From fusions of Persian and Mediterranean to the traditional flavors of Vietnamese cuisine, Salt Lake City is a gastronomic paradise.

Guy's first stop is the 'Pars Cuisine' restaurant that offers a medley of Persian and Mediterranean cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting, with warm earth tones set off by a vibrant blue mural featuring a Middle Eastern arch. Fieri starts off his meal with dolma--stuffed grape leaves that are cooked in a delicious lemon and olive oil broth. Then he tries the kashk-e bademjan, an appetizer made of fried eggplant with caramelized onion and garlic mixed with kashk, a tangy whey. To finish off his meal, Fieri samples the chelo kebab--skewered beef, chicken, and ground lamb served over a bed of shirin polow--sweet and sour rice and topped off with a grilled tomato. This restaurant is a true treasure trove for those looking for a unique and flavorful dining experience.

Next on his list of culinary adventures is the 'Oh Mai' Vietnamese Sandwich Kitchen. After being greeted by owner Ahn Mai, Fieri heads to the kitchen to check out the "bread room." Here, the restaurant's fresh and soft bread is baked daily. Fieri tries the restaurant's signature dish--a banh mi sandwich consisting of pork belly, head cheese, pate, cucumber, and pickled veggies spread on the fresh bread and topped off with a spicy chili paste. Next, Fieri samples the 'Oh My Gau,' which is a bowl of rice noodles and brisket, finished off with fresh sprouts, Thai basil, and jalapeno. Fieri is amazed by the flavors of Vietnamese cuisine and is impressed with how authentically they are being presented at 'Oh Mai.'

Fieri's final destination on this episode is a Brazilian barbecue joint called 'Tushar Brazilian Express.' The dining area is simple with a black and white checkered floor and nostalgic yellow walls. Fieri cannot help but admire how the chef, Tushar, cooks his meat to perfection, and the smell of sensational meats fills the air. Tushar begins by serving Fieri a chicken heart as an appetizer. Then, he brings out freshly cooked, sizzling skewers of rare beef, which are sliced to serve. The meat has been marinated in a secret sauce that locks in the flavor and then cooked over a grill. Tushar also brings out a delicious sausage that has been split and then grilled to perfection. The "piece de resistance" is the 'Picanha,' which is a rump roast that is salted and cooked to perfection, and it's served with a chimichurri sauce. Fieri is impressed by the quality of the meat and how delicious it is.

This episode of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives showcases a medley of diverse flavors and cuisines that Salt Lake City has to offer. From Persian to Vietnamese to Brazilian barbecue, there's something for everyone in this charming Utah city.
