Ep 24. Return to Amazon River Islands

Following up on her previous exploration of Brazil's Amazon River, host Dylan Dreyer sets out to rediscover the culture and formations of the Amazonian islands. In this 24th episode of season 2 titled 'Return to Amazon River Islands', she retraces her steps down the river once again to revisit some of the unique island communities that thrive in the region.

Dylan commences her journey by first visiting Marajo Island, one of the largest river islands in the world. She wastes no time in delving into the island's rich cultural heritage by introducing us to the local Marajoara people. Their unique way of life is deeply intertwined with the island's ecosystem, and she learns about their history and present-day relationship with the environment. Next, Dylan takes a speedboat to the Anavilhanas archipelago, a cluster of hundreds of islands surrounded by the most extensive freshwater archipelago system on the planet. Here, she gets a taste of island adventure as she explores the lush jungle, spotting a variety of exotic animals like pink dolphins, monkeys, and macaws. Dylan gets to witness first-hand the vital role the Anavilhanas ecosystem plays in the protection of the Amazon rainforest, acting as a crucial buffer between man and nature.

From the Anavilhanas, Dylan sets out to visit the indigenous Yanomami people living on the banks of the Rio Catrimani. She joins them on a march to protect their land from illegal miners and deforestation, an ongoing fight that has escalated in recent years. Dylan spends time in the Yanomami community and has an opportunity to learn about their culture, beliefs, and practices first hand. As the sun sets on the day, she is treated to the Yanomami's traditional fire dance, an ancient ceremony performed with much spirit and vigor.

Dylan's journey wraps up with a visit to the remote island of Pupunha, near the border of Brazil and Colombia. Pupunha is unique because of the preservation efforts that have been going on there for decades. The locals have created a self-sustaining community through eco-tourism initiatives, planting palm trees and selling their fruits and other products, and even domesticating the local wildlife. The island is also home to a number of unique birds, including macaws and toucans, which thrive in the region's rainforest environment. Dylan takes stock of the advances and practices on the island and gets an opportunity to participate in many local activities, including fan weaving and cooking some locally grown food.
