Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife is a captivating adventure and exploration show with numerous mysteries and quests to unravel. In season 1 episode 3 titled "Edge of Existence," our host and adventurer, Josh Gates, takes us on a journey to explore the possibility of life after death.

The episode starts with Josh Gates elucidating that humanity's search for an explanation about the afterlife is universal. However, in this episode, our host takes a new approach by exploring different cultures' beliefs about this subject, starting with the ancient Egyptians, who regarded the afterlife as a continuation of life on earth. To investigate this further, Josh ventures to the British Museum in London, where he gets a sneak peek of the world-renowned mummies of ancient Egypt, including that of Pharaoh Ramesses VI, which is regarded as one of the most beautiful mummies in the world.

After exploring Egypt's culture and beliefs, Josh switches his focus to the American culture and visits a fortune-teller, who specializes in communicating with spirits. Upon arrival, the fortune-teller requests that Josh write down the date his father passed, and surprisingly, the fortune-teller mentions some details paired with the date Josh wrote down. The fortune-teller offers Josh some spiritual guidance for communicating with his father, but he emphasizes that such journeys could be dangerous and unpredictable.

As the search for an answer on afterlife continues, Josh embarks on a new journey to visit the people of Borneo who practice the ancient arts of communicating with the dead. During this excursion, Josh explores various rituals and ceremonies, including an ancient fire dancing ceremony that is believed to help open a portal between the living and the dead. He also meets a famous Borneo shaman who demonstrates an ancient ritual of communicating with the dead using a stick and an old-school writing technique, which Josh describes as a bizarre experience.

On the quest for more answers, Josh takes a trip to the Amazon and meets an indigenous tribe that practices the Ayahuasca ceremony, which is believed to give them visions that help them communicate with spirits. The Ayahuasca ceremony comes with its set of rituals and requirements, among them, fasting and abstaining from sex for some days before the ceremony. When Josh finally drinks the Ayahuasca potion, he reports having the most profound spiritual experience he has ever had, citing that the visions made him feel connected to his inner self and the universe.

In the final leg of the journey, Josh Gates goes to New Orleans, where he explores the voodoo culture of Louisiana, which also holds a unique belief about afterlife and how spiritual energies can be communicated beyond the grave. In this episode, Josh explores an elaborate voodoo altar, meets voodoo practitioners whose rituals merge Christian, African, and Creole elements.

Ultimately, Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife season 1 episode 3 "Edge of Existence" is a thrilling and thought-provoking adventure that takes the audience on a spiritual journey exploring different ideas and beliefs about the afterlife. As is the case with other episodes of the show, Josh Gates proves to be an excellent guide, investigator, and storyteller, making for an exciting and engaging viewing experience.
