To Soar and Never Falter is the fifth episode of the first season of Fame, a television series that aired in the 1980s and followed the lives of students attending the fictional New York City High School for the Performing Arts. In this episode, viewers are introduced to several different storylines, each focused on a member of the school's student body.

One storyline follows Leroy Johnson (Gene Anthony Ray), a talented dancer who is struggling to keep up with his grades. As the episode opens, Leroy is seen being scolded by his calculus teacher for falling asleep in class. Despite Leroy's protests that he works hard in his dance classes, the teacher is unmoved and tells him that he will be failing the class if his grades don't improve. Meanwhile, Leroy's dance teacher, Miss Sherwood (Ann Nelson), is concerned about Leroy's behavior and tries to convince him to take his academic performance more seriously. Leroy, however, is distracted by his upcoming dance audition and can't focus on anything else.

Another storyline follows the school's drama students, who are rehearsing for their upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. Hillary (Carol Mayo Jenkins), who is playing the role of Juliet, is struggling to connect with her Romeo, a shy and awkward classmate named Montgomery (Todd Graff). Despite Hillary's attempts to make Montgomery feel more comfortable, he remains distant and unresponsive. Meanwhile, director Mr. Berg (Morgan Stevens) is dealing with an egotistical actor named Tony (William H. Macy), who is constantly complaining about his role and demanding more lines.

Another plotline concerns the school's music students, who are preparing for their upcoming concert. Coco (Irene Cara), a talented vocalist, is dealing with a bout of stage fright and is worried that her nerves will cause her to mess up during the performance. Meanwhile, Bruno (Lee Curreri), a struggling composer, is faced with a creative block and can't seem to come up with anything original.

As the episode progresses, each student's story reaches a climax. Leroy, who is auditioning for a prestigious dance company, discovers that his grades have indeed been too low to graduate, jeopardizing his future. Hillary finally convinces Montgomery to open up to her, and they begin to develop a real connection. Tony is humbled when he is forced to step aside for another actor, and Bruno eventually overcomes his block and creates a beautiful new piece of music.

Throughout the episode, viewers are treated to several musical and dance performances, including a rendition of "Somewhere" from West Side Story and a ballet sequence set to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. The episode ends on a hopeful note, with the students all triumphing over their respective challenges and coming together for the school's final performance.

To Soar and Never Falter is an exciting and dramatic episode of Fame, showcasing the diverse talents of the New York City High School for the Performing Arts' student body and their struggles to balance their craft with academic excellence. Viewers are sure to be entertained by the colorful cast of characters and the breathtaking musical and dance numbers that make this show an enduring classic of the 1980s.
