Gye Baek is a Korean television series based on the story of the actual historical figure named Gye Baek. Gye Baek was a great general of the Baekje region of Korea in the middle of the seventh century. The show depicts the most famous part of Gye Baek's life. Baekje is invaded in 660 by a rival kingdom, called Silla, which seeks to destroy the kingdom of Baekje and take over the land. The Silla bring an army of nearly 200,000 soldiers to fight against Baekje. The television series tells the story of how Gye Baek goes out to meet this army with all of his soldiers, which only totaled about 5,000 men. Meanwhile, as Gye Baek is fighting a battle that he can't possibly win, the inner workings of the Baekje royal court are also in turmoil. The king of Baekje is Moo. Unfortunately, Moo has little power or desire to command. All he really cares about is his first wife, Sun Hwa, and their child. King Moo's second wife, named Sa Taek Bi, is actually working for the Silla, so that her son, who is the king's second son, might sit on the throne. To achieve her goals, Sa Taek Bi is trying to have Sun Hwa and Sun Hwa's son killed. Gye Baek continues to fight his endless battle. The king attempts to free his wife and son from the clutches of Sa Taek Bi. Old rivalries surface between people who once trusted each other, causing more tension on the battlefield and in the court. In addition, old secrets and hidden romances emerge. Gye Baek, King Moo and both of the queens must fight for their lives and what they believe is right if they want to emerge from the battle victoriously.
