In Highlander season 1 episode 16, "The Beast Below," our hero Duncan MacLeod finds himself in the midst of a string of mysterious murders. The victims have all been found with their hearts cut out, leading authorities to believe that a cannibalistic monster is on the loose. As a fellow Immortal, Duncan suspects that another of his kind is responsible, but he must tread carefully to avoid exposing his own secret to the mortal police force.
When Duncan investigates the latest victim, he discovers that the man had been researching the legend of a creature called the Quickenings Beast. According to myth, the Beast was a powerful and ferocious immortal who had killed other immortals in order to absorb their life force and become even stronger. The legend goes that the Beast was finally stopped and killed by a group of immortals who had banded together to defeat it.
With this information in mind, Duncan begins to suspect that his old friend and fellow Immortal, Andrew Cord, may be responsible for the murders. Cord had been obsessed with the legend of the Quickenings Beast and had even claimed to have defeated it himself. Duncan sets out to confront Cord and put a stop to the killings, but he soon realizes that there may be more to the story than he first realized.
As Duncan delves deeper into the mystery, he begins to uncover a web of betrayal and deceit that threatens to ensnare him as well. He discovers that an ancient Immortal named Kragen has been manipulating events from behind the scenes, pitting Cord against Duncan in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Kragen hopes to use the chaos caused by the murders to take out both Cord and Duncan, eliminating potential threats to his own power and dominance in the Immortal community.
With time running out and the body count rising, Duncan must race to stop both Cord and Kragen before they can cause any more harm. Along the way, he learns some hard truths about loyalty, betrayal, and the delicate balance of power that exists between Immortals. In the end, he may be forced to make a difficult choice between his duty as an Immortal and his loyalty to his friends and allies.
