- May 14, 2020
In Hot Bench season 6 episode 160 titled "If You Get Me Fired, I Can't Pay You Back!; Nail Salon Maims Customer?!", Judge Acker presides over two cases that involve tricky legal situations. The first case involves a loan between friends that has turned sour. The plaintiff, Sophia, is suing her former friend and business partner, Sandra, for failing to repay a loan that Sophia made to Sandra while she was still employed at Sophia's salon. According to Sophia, Sandra asked to borrow the money to pay off some personal debt, and Sophia loaned her $5,000 out of the goodness of her heart. However, things took a turn for the worse when Sophia says she was forced to fire Sandra from her job, and Sandra retaliated by not paying back the loan. Sandra argues that she never agreed to a specific repayment plan, and that the loan was actually a gift because Sophia had been helping her out financially for a long time. However, Judge Acker isn't so sure and must determine whether or not the loan was legally binding.
The second case is even more dramatic and centers around a customer who was allegedly injured at a nail salon. The plaintiff, Sherry, claims that she was seriously injured when a nail technician accidentally spilled boiling water on her foot during a pedicure. Sherry says that the salon staff were negligent and didn't take proper safety precautions, which resulted in her needing extensive medical treatment for burns and scarring. However, the salon owner, Ling, insists that Sherry was responsible for her own injuries because she moved her foot and caused the hot water to spill. Ling also says that Sherry never reported the injury to her at the time, and that she only found out months later when she received a demand letter from Sherry's lawyer. Judge Acker must decide who is telling the truth and whether or not the salon is liable for Sherry's injuries.
Throughout the episode, Judge Acker and her fellow judges, Tanya Acker and Michael Corriero, listen to testimony from both sides and try to get to the bottom of each case. They are especially tough on the defendants, who they feel are not being entirely truthful. However, they also ask pointed questions of the plaintiffs and don't shy away from asking them to explain their actions and decisions. Despite the serious nature of the cases, there are also some lighter moments in the episode as the judges share jokes and stories with one another. All in all, Hot Bench season 6 episode 160 is an engaging and thought-provoking installment of the popular courtroom series.
