Located in the peaceful town of Ohfunabashi, Kanamemo is a show about Kana Nakamachi, a high school dropout who ends up working at a newspaper company after her grandmother passes away. Episode 5 begins with the girls of the newspaper company, along with Haruka Nishida, a disabled girl who they've recently befriended, discussing their plan to go to the public bath. They're all excited for their first time there together, and Kana is especially excited for her very first time going to a public bath.
As they walk to the bathhouse, the girls can't help but notice that Haruka isn't feeling too well. They decide to give her some space while they enjoy the bath, and take turns keeping an eye on her outside. Meanwhile, the girls marvel at the different features of the bath, including a pool with a slide, a jacuzzi, and even a sauna. As they relax, they talk about everything from what they want to do in the future to their first crushes.
As the day wears on, Kana notes that she's never really had any close female friends before, and that the bathhouse is the perfect place to get to know the girls better. She remembers how she used to be alone all the time, even when she was in school, and is grateful to have found such great friends at the newspaper company. But before she can finish her thought, she sees Haruka in distress outside the bathhouse. They rush to her side, and when they learn that she's lost a special charm that her mother gave her, Kana and the other girls make it their mission to help find it.
Despite their best efforts, they're unable to locate Haruka's charm. Kana is especially frustrated, as it seems like she's unable to do anything right lately. Feeling guilty, she apologizes to Haruka for not being able to find the charm. But Haruka insists that she's just happy to have made such great friends, and that she doesn't really care about the charm anymore. Her words help to comfort Kana, and she's grateful to have such supportive friends.
As the girls walk home, they talk about their experiences at the bathhouse. Kana reflects on her first time at the bath with the girls, and notes how she felt like she was finally a part of something. As they part ways, Kana realizes how lucky she is to have such great friends, and decides to work harder than ever to be the best reporter she can be.
Episode 5 of Kanamemo is a great example of how the show balances humor and heart. While it's certainly funny to see the girls enjoying all the features of the public bath, the real highlight of the episode is the way it shows the bonds of friendship between the characters. Despite the setback with Haruka's charm, the girls are all there for each other and work together to make the best of a bad situation. By the end of the episode, Kana realizes just how important her new friends are to her, and the viewer can't help but feel the same way.
