Kathy Griffin Comedy Specials Season 5 Episode 8 Norma Gay

  • July 27, 2009

When Proposition 8 is passed in California, Kathy realizes that even though she has always been a gay rights activist, there is still work to be done. Kathy is asked to help raise money for the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Home for Transitional Living, and jumps at the opportunity to help. There, she befriends a group of homeless gay youths who have been abandoned by their families simply for being gay. Kathy takes her new friends up to the capitol steps in Sacramento for a protest. Back in LA, Kathy goes door to door in communities that voted against gay marriage to try and change some minds. Kathy also plans a benefit show fundraiser for the cause. She drives over to Melissa Etheridge's house to pick up some delicious cookies Melissa is making as a donation to Kathy's fundraiser. Melissa inspires Kathy even more by likening her to Sally Field in "Norma Rae" and christens her "Norma Gay." Everything seems to be going fine when suddenly the Supreme Court makes their decision to uphold Proposition 8 and Kathy grabs her new gay friends (with mom Maggie in tow) and they hit the streets of West Hollywood for a massive rally where Kathy - along with A-List Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and A-List actress Drew Barrymore -- speaks out.
